Some things that bother me...

Hello all,

I thought I would take a minute to discuss a few things irritating me recently. Please feel free to comment on any of my remarks.

First of, I would have to say the comparison between Blu-ray and Beta is right up at the top of the list. Yeah I realize sony has had several formats fail in the past, but to say Blu-ray is "Sony" vs. everyone else is a bit bogus. I will admit I own a few sony products, however I am far from being a fanboy. I'm sure most of you know how this new format war stacks up right now and I would say its almost Toshiba vs. everyone else.

Another thing that drives me crazy is people saying they see no difference between up-converting dvd and the new HD formats. ?????

Why the heck are there so many damned a/v connections on the back of our A/V receivers? Does anyone really have 3 VCRs they must hook up now days? The real-estate on the back of receivers should be dedicated more towards now and the future. Also on the same topic, why are there composite / s-video connections on HD players? Is there really anyone out there w/o a HDTV buying one of these?

BTW: I would like to applaud Denon on their Blu-ray player with only HDMI output.

Well..many people buy HDTV without knowing that they need bluray/hd player to see the 1080p on their new tv. They thought they can just live with their regular dvds and expecting hi-def from it. So who would have known but us?:D

My Sony does a fine job up converting, and many friends comment on that, but what blows them away is when we toss in a Blu ray.

There are some great video's on youtube about the format war.

I've never thought of the HD format war to be Sony vs the world. I've always considered it as Sony vs Toshiba. Given that, I've rooted, whether under my breath or not, for Toshiba. When I finally made the leap of faith toward either format my choice was based on price alone. I bought the HD-A2 for $100 vs what? A $400 ugly as sin PS3? Yeah, OK, so I jumped on the wrong boat going nowhere. A hundred bucks later... I'll live thru the trauma.

With my 57" RP 1080i Toshiba, the differences between a standard up-converted DVD vs a HD-DVD are noticeable, Not drop dead "holy crap" I'm glad I spent that $100 noticeable, but noticeable.
Take note I've mentioned my TV's specs for a reason; I don't feel I'm in the minority owning a TV with what some might consider to be yesterday's technology. I feel this might be the reason for the indifference observed by some.

Seriously, how much of the selection of inputs is dictated by the real estate of the rear panel? My take on it is how much do Yamaha, Onkyo, Pioneer, etc... want to give for free before forcing us the "buck up" to the next level and spend that extra $300 to get that extra HDMI input?

Denon's choice of HDMI only?
Arrogant & short sighted. I believe I've said that before, somewhere.
