Social Media vs Forums

I'm having trouble finding a use for social media. Is it just me?

I tried facebook a couple years ago and hated it. I don't like the way it announces to everyone that you joined. I ended up friending family and coworkers that I wasnt really interested in talking to. I ended up closing it down.

Recently I started playing with twitter. The only reason I joined was to try to talk a specific celebrity into doing a happy birthday video for my wife, which worked btw! So that was really cool, but the rest of it annoyed me. Nobody really has conversations, it's about getting likes and followers. But last night I had enough. I posted a picture that I took of 2 jet streams that formed a perfect X. For some odd reason this attracted all the conspiracy nut cases trying to convince me that it meant the gov was following me around and tracking the gps on my phone. Even with the battery removed they say you can be tracked. C'mon people, we all have the same brain why can't everybody use it? But then at the same time something else happened. My wife and I started watching this show that the above celeb is in and we really like it. But because we follow him spoilers started showing up on my feed from east coasters that started watching it before it ever aired where I live. Ticked me off that people would do that crap.

So now I've closed my twitter account as well. I dont know, I just like forums better. People can actually talk about things and nobodies worried about whos the most popular. Is it just me? Am I part of the wrong generation being in my early 40s? Should I try something like tumblr or instagram? Redit sucked, I didnt like that one either. Maybe I'll just bug you guys some more around here.

Drunkpenguin, You May not know it but You just started a really good Thread, at least speaking for myself. Like You I had FB for years, a few date sites and so on. They are All closed now for the very same reasons and more. The last straw for me was Facebook with all the “Fake” accounts that where posting so much fake news, in our last presidential election. Not to mention all the fake women trying to hit me up finding out they were from scammers, porn sites, Bots, people posting really nasty flights of who they didn’t like and so on. I totally agree with You, Forums are totally much better! I have met some awesome people on here Your one of them! Just with this site alone I’ve taken my level of knowledge and experience with this hobby to a new level. With Our leader “ Gene” who to me doesn’t get enough credit and praise for all the hard work he does alone with his staff!! So “We” can enjoy Our Audio/Video and make better choices on gear! I absolutely love this side! “Gene” with his Staff also, with the Best Ole Timers on here must be doing something right. Genes website is well known Worldwide, cause “Dam Russians” -always trying to Rip Gene off! :) I almost forgot, those that do use those stupid sites just for the “likes” that get All them ducks to follow them,, in turn use all those likes as a way for profit!

Reddit does not suck, but does require some customization before it's shows more interesting stuff for you. Part of the fun is discovering the niche communities which focus on stuff related to you and ignoring/filtering out the stuff you don't care about.
I'm also using LinkedIn for keeping in touch with colleagues, resume, references and job opportunities.
P.s: I'm same age as you're - early 40s.

P. S. S: i do agree on FB - I avoid it like a plague it is.

Oh yeah the hot models that wanna talk to you. I had one every day. Here's a good story for ya. I have an old friend whos more of an acquaintance now really, but he met some hot model girl from the Philippines that he started talking to. No offense to him, but hes not hot model worthy if you know what I mean. They fell in love even tho they only talked over social media. No phone calls ever. People even found her photos on other accounts, but he refused to believe she was playing him. He started sending her money every time she cried about a hospital bill or something. This went on for 2 years! At one point he sent her money to get on a plane to the states, drove to the airport and she wasnt there. Something happened dont remember her excuse. But he kept on with her. Eventually she finally agreed to meet him if he flew into to the Philippines. So he cashed out his 401k, sent her an unknown amount of money and jumped on an airplane. When he landed she wasnt there, duh. Got hit by a car on the way to the airport and she was too embarrassed to let him come see her at the hospital. DumbAss spent a week by himself in a hotel room, never even went out to see the sites. We're not really friends any more because how do you respect someone like that? As far as I know shes still playing him.

I think my issue with reddit was I was invisible at first. Can't remember. Don't you have to be around for a while before you can post or something?

Mid 50s here. Reddit is just for fun for me - I never really thought about posting. I use FB mostly for it's original intent: connecting with friends and family - all the other stuff does not interest me. I use Twitter very rarely and usually to read what someone I follow (mostly audio related) has written. Same for Instagram. LinkedIn is great for professional purposes. Oddly enough, I rather miss Myspace as it was a fun, creative outlet and an easy way to "match" with others that have common interests (plus, I got quite a few dates out of it).

Remember when being social meant writing letters, calling people on the phone and actually going outside or am I too old?

I use Facebook occasionally to see what city my sister is residing in or what her job of the week is. But I do have some friends that live a long way from me that post on FB. They have 2 kids that are strongly into bluegrass music so they post links to their shows and such. The one kid is turning into a phenomenal banjo picker. As in he's been asked to join a regional bluegrass band. But beyond that, it's a meh.

I can't get into twitter as I think it's too easy to get caught up in stupid crap that is meaningless. Like what the Kardashians are doing or thinking has any relevance to a middle-aged guy beyond Kim's serious booty.

I do like Reddit. But I agree with Boredsysadmin that you do need to customize it to find the niches that are relevant. One Reddit forum I like is the LegalAdvice subreddit. It can be quite informative but also you do get people who are quite simple incredibly stupid and don't realize it. A recent one was a high school kid who hazed a new sports teammate, the team mate complained and the idiot was upset that he got called out for hazing. He is too stupid to realize that he will be lucky to not get charged by the DA or expelled from school. A favorite topic in LegalAdvice is Tree Law. It's amazing how people absolutely love Tree Law issue on Reddit. But when a neighbor illegally cuts down a 90 year old oak tree to improve their view, it can get mighty nasty for them as the consequences can be very expensive. It's been fun.

Another subreddit I like is Childrenfallingover. Those are great videos to get you through school events. Or AbsoluteUnits which is excessively large objects/animals/people. Lots of fat cats, fat dogs, etc. Amusing. For those with children, I like the subreddit for puns and Dadjokes so I can get more ammunition with which to embarrass my family. Of course, there are subs dedicated to mostly drunk people doing stupid crap which makes me glad I partook in those activities before cell phone cameras were everywhere.

r/crappyoffbrands: /r/crappyoffbrands: only the cheesiest and funniest examples of generic knock-offs
This subreddit is a forum in which users can submit pictures or videos of examples of crappy or just plain funny off-brand versions of various products. These examples can be both from present day as well as from the past. We also encourage submission of examples on film and TV where a name-brand product is substituted for something more absurd.
Also encouraged are posts of bad knock-offs (fake visions of products that fail to resemble the original in pretty obvious and hilarious ways).

I like fb. Easy to keep up with family and friends. I'm also part of a great local beer group full of really nice people. They have regular meetups/shares and it's always a good hang :D

and if you decide to use Reddit on the mobile device, forget about Reddit mobile site or the official app. "Boost" the one you want it's well worth a few bucks. or BaconReader for the pear-shaped logo devices

I'm having trouble finding a use for social media. Is it just me?
No, it's not just you. When I closed my account, FB asked me why. My answer, "Its not me, its you."

I had been on FB, but I would go hot & cold on it. It just didn't make sense that peoples' lives seemed to revolve around it. After all the false & misleading political posts were exposed, it became clear that FB and other social media sites thrive only on the number of viewers and their clicks so they can sell advertising. True or false didn't seem to play any part in it. When I realized I was not a FB client, but one of the products they sold, I shut down my account. I never had any use for twitter, reddit, or the others. I did use linkedin, but always hated it because it showered me with unwanted emails.

When internet chat started, you actually had to communicate in your own words, and you had to keep up, being it was real time. I met a lot of bright, witty and talented people on IRC. It was faster paced, and it would expose such things as illiteracy and plagiarism, rather quickly, and those folks would fall behind or give up until they figured it out. I learned how the Windows/DOS and Linux OS (and hardware) worked via IRC, from the American and Euro-tech geeks that would. These days, all you get in response to anything resembling an original thought is captured in some stupid and predictable meme, and a myriad of philosophical quotes that one should have figured out and forgotten by junior high school.

Virtue signaling. I mean, WTF? "I bet this won't even get one share," with sad tears emoticons to validate it even further. You're right and, FU too, while we're at it. A host of other such pap, that the poster does not even realize that all they are doing is, showing that they haven't been to town much or, what, did you just get on the internet today??

I avoid social media for the most part. I post photos and words of my own for those interested in what I am actually up to and to use FB as somewhat as a hosting/storage site. Oddly enough, it's the few people that I carried over from the IRC days that can actually respond with something original or conversive, even if it tends to go beyond the current social media trends.

Hi! It seems to me that you don't know how to use social networks correctly. There are also many groups and topics of interest there, and you can meet interesting people. In addition, you can find talented young people on social networks or promote your creativity with their help. Now I promote my poems using Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter. I ordered ads for my accounts on SocialBoosting.com. I hope soon my pages will become meat where people will be able to communicate in the comments about everything they are interested in.

To use all the functionality of social networks, you need to spend time, and you will be able to understand how all the functions work.
Based on your username and this being your first post, I'm waiting for the link to a penis enlargement supplement or something along those lines...

Maybe it is just me, but most socal media seems to be targeted at users who take a deep interest in themselves (look at me and what I do), not so much your interest in others. While there may be some legitimate uses, the vast majority is a vapid black hole of ego and stupidity.

Doesn't quite attract the same sort or people. Closer to a subreddit than what one would refer to as "social media" in today's context. I don't come here for likes to validate myself. This is more of a community, where social media is about "me, me, me" almost to the exclusion, not inclusion, of others.
