So you have a 10k budget.......

Imagine if you had a 10k budget to buy a 5.1 speaker setup with, what would you buy? Bear in mind I only want speakers, that is all this money goes to.

Also bear in mind that I would prefer to not be forced to buy an amp and would like to run everything off of a Yamaha 2700.

I am already 100% sold on a JL 112 or 113 Fathom sub so thats 2,500 or so gone.

So that leaves 7,500 to spend on center, left, right, and surrounds. What do you guys think?

Room and Usage info:

17 feet wide 22 feet long 8 foot ceilings
80% movies 20% music

Thoughts?

If you absolutely must spend that:

2 pair:
http://www.av123.com/products_product.php?section=speakers&product=46.1
$5600

1 of these:
http://www.av123.com/products_product.php?section=speakers&product=100.1
$599

1 pair:
http://www.av123.com/products_product.php?section=speakers&product=7.1
$599

Sorry, got your a 7 speaker system for your money.
You will also save quite a bit with family pricing for that package.
Why get two pair of the floor standing speakers? There is no real need to do so. I would recommend getting two pair of the surrounds and one set of the floor stands if you go with the av123 speakers as to not waste money pointlessly.

pair of Monitor Audio RS6 or RS8 fronts = less than 1k
one of Monitor Audio RS LCR = less than 1k
pair of Monitor Audio RS1 or RS6 or RS8 rears = less than 1k
total= less than 3k USD. you don't need to spend much more than 3k for an 80% movie setup.

edit:

if you want a matching finish with your JL audio sub ...

you can go Monitor Audio GS20 or GS60 fronts = 2k and 3k respectively
Monitor Audio GS LCR = less than 1k
Monitor Audio GS20 or GS60 rears = 2k and 3k respectively

so that's 7k max or 5k for GS20's

Personally, with that budget, I would use it all on two main speakers, in order to get REALLY good speakers. I find really good stereo to be better than surround sound with lesser speakers. I would save up and get the matching surround sound speakers later on, starting with the center channel. You can get away with considerably lower quality surround speakers. Those channels primarily contain sound F/X and ambiance information. I would personally bargain a B&W dealer down to about 10k on a pair of N802D. I would not consider any of their lower level speakers, personally. Unfortunately, I am not sure if your receiver can drive those speakers. The N802D has a very wide band where it is about 3 ohms in the impedance, as well as substantial electrical reactivity. But it's easy enough to use a good low cost pro amp to drive them. The B&W N802D is a very linear speaker with virtually no colorations due to resonances. This means you can easily E.Q it with a precision DSP E.Q. to get virtually any sound signature that you desire. It is, afterall, a standard reference monitor in many of the world's upper level recording studios.

if I'm not mistaken, the latest model is 802D (with the diamond tweeter)
the previous model was the N802 (nautilus model)

For an entire 5.1 system right at $10K, the Atlantic Technology 8200e system comes to mind. I've listened to the prior version, the 8200 system quite a bit, and have found it to be a very impressive system. Personally, I have to echo WmAx's advice about spending as much of the budget as possible on the front speakers. That's what I did w/ my system, used all my budget and bought the LR speakers first, then just kept saving $$ for the rest of the speakers in steps. Took a few years, but it is worth the wait IMO.

I would agree - go with GS60s for fronts but go GS10s for rears and GS center; that is my setup with the JL Audio Fathom F113 sub; I am very happy with my setup; receiver is the Arcam avr350

You did state 80% for movies and 20% music. I won't allow myself to audition speakers, I can't afford:eek:!! However, for the sake of responding to your post and that budget, how about these http://www.psbspeakers.com/series.php?sId=1
Based on peoples comments and reviews these would work perfectly for either application, but especially for H/T

I second the PSB platinums. I have auditioned the M2 and T8's and they sound amazing. Althought I think that a setup with T8's and M2's with a C4 would be over your budget. And also the Platinums are 4 ohm speakers so that Yamaha would have a hard time powering a 5.1 setup by itself.

Yea I know they are 4ohm. That Yamaha has a very good amp section and would do for awhile, but when your talking 8-10 G's for speakers you know you'll be looking at more headroom sooner, rather then later:p. Since your looking at the JL's, then IMO there's no point in buying full range speakers, go with monitors and get 2 JL f 112's.
PS: I read your question @ AVS but posted here instead!;) It's easier to spend other peoples money, then my own. LOL

Now I'm considering a simple Axiom setup like a pair of M22's, a pair of QS8's, and a VP 150 with a couple of the JL subs.

That might be a bit better route.....

Since you're already getting a great sub in the JL, I think you should try to audition the Focal.JMLabs Electra 1007 Be and CC 1000 Be for your mains and center. The Electra series simply sounds amazing to my ears. The surrounds can be whatever is left over in the budget, maybe even a lower level Focal, like Chorus.

Basically any hi end monitor from reputable mfg's(ie:paradigm,Monitor Audio,Kef,B&W,Psb,Klipsch,Energy:eek: just to name a few!) would do. These would provide excellent imaging and detail and the JL's would do the rest. Only you can determined what would sound good to you and fit your budget. If you go with ID retailer such as AXIOM, then consider these http://www.ascendacoustics.com/pages/products/speakers/SRM1/srm1.html OR like in an earlier post the av123 products.

Good luck in your decision, Billy p

The Veritas are very nice....

I would be really looking hard at Paradigm Sigs, they are very nice looking, and as happy as I am with the studios, Im sure they would be awesome...

I have also had an eye/ear out for Aerial Acoustics... The 9's are absolutely gorgeous but Im thinking...a new 5.1 system of Aerials would run considerably past that budget.
