It is a very good movie IMHO. Brandon Routh looks amazingly similar to Chris Reeve and he played it very well. Oddly enough though, I see more Lois Lane in Parker Posey (Kitty Kowalski) than in Kate Bosworth:D . Overall, it's a good refreshing Superman movie.

Seemed to be getting good reviews prior to release. I'm off next week, so I'll probably cruise over and catch it at matinee...

I thought the movie was ok and certainly less cheesy than the old Superman movies but I felt it lacked in the following areas:

1) Poor and inconsistant plot - I cannot ellaborate without spoiling it for those who didn't see it
2) Mundane acting by all but Kevin Spacey whom was brilliant IMO
3) Superman looked a little too feminine and air brushed

I was expecting a movie on the level of Batman Begins and instead was delivered a movie with a mediocre plot and typical disfunctional (love gone bad) relationship to reflect our current times.

Overall I give it a: C+

Personally, I haven't seen a Superman I liked other than the more recent Superfriends cartoons with DarkSide, Green Lantern, etc.

Hmmm....C+? Maybe I'll wait for DVD then... I dunno, depends on what I'm doing and how bored I am. I liked the first Superman movie, but none after that. I hated Spiderman and Daredevil, but very much enjoyed Batman Begins and was entertained by the X-men movies.

Well don't base your decision off of just my opinion. After all I am not Roger Ebert ;)

I thought Xmen3 kicked butt but it didn't review too well, so there you go...

Actually, Roger Ebert gave X-men United a thumbs up, so maybe you are Roger Ebert?!! I think you're in the wrong profession. I'm looking forward to the Ebert and DellaSala duo when Roper gets the boot!!

So is a C+ a thumbs up or a thumbs down?? Would you recommend seeing it in the theater, wait for DVD, or skip it all together?

LOL. The first thing I would do is put Ebert on a diet :D

Definately go see it if you can view it in a decent theater. It does bring back memories if you grew up when the original Superman movies hit the theater. I think I was around 7 or 8 when I saw Superman II in some capacity it made me feel young again.

If you don't walk in expecting to see a Batman Begins type movie and take it for what it is, you will enjoy it. It's definately better than all of previous movies in most aspects IMO.

I would give it a B rating, not more and not less. The general storyline is more to the human side of superman and building up his new character so don't expect loads of heavy actions there. Gene mentioned that the actor looked airbrushed is true, looked cartoonish even...:D

Well I am not gonna try and offer my review of it although I thought it was a very fun flick, I do have the luxory of an IMAX theater around the corner from my house. Now the 3D just doesn't work for me for any movie, even though it was cool in this. What I was impressed with was the sound. WOW. The sound at the beginning before the credits, I won't say what because I don't want to spoil anything, but that sound was incredible. Any time superman flew by felt like it was all LFE. Incredible. I can't wait to own this on DVD. I was impressed anyway.

Though I thought Xmen 3 was entertaining, its was horribly off the true story. Thats what happens when you change directors. Like C'mon, the phoenix wasn't the devil, and if I recall, she was covered in flames!

I am in no rush to see this movie. Subparman was never a cool comic book hero to me.

Just got back from an IMAX viewing of Superman Returns. Fantastic audio experience. Great use of surrounds and LFE. One particular great subwoofer moment I'm looking forward to on DVD is when a giant column of rock falls to the ground while Lex and Kitty are running away (if you've seen the movie, you know) and lands with an awesome, flat, loud and pressurizing THUD.

The IMAX 3D and video quality-
I thought the 3D effects were at times gorgeous and at other times unnecessary.

The gorgeous- there is scene where Clark as a young man is practicing his skills on the farm. He suspends himself in the air just a couple feet off the floor (think David Blaine, only horizontal) this was spectacular as it appears his legs and torso are projecting into the audience as the camera angle changes.

The second 3D scene is when Superman rescues a space shuttle and a 747 used to piggy back it into orbit. This scene is nothing short of EXHILERATING. IMHO worth the price of admission alone. I don't want to give anything away, so I'll leave it at that.

Another is when a boat had sunk and there was debris rollicking with the waves, a couple times I caught myself leaning back in my chair from reflex as they came toward the camera. Also is very nice helicopter flying over the ocean, I felt like I just reach out and grab it (my two sons did try, just for S&G's).

The fourth 3D scene is at the end of the movie and shows Superman flying around Metropolis at night. Gratuitous and unnecessary. Anti-climatic when compared to the previous three.

I didn't notice any "air brushing" as previously mentioned. Nothing looked fake to me. IMO the PQ was outstanding (should be for an IMAX anyway).

What did kick some arse in 3D was a preview of "Open Season" a CG animation flick coming soon. WOW! You will get "two for flinching" on this one.

Plot and story line? I give it a B. I think this movie could have been a good 15 minutes shorter. I don't like this policy of character and background defining that remains true to the original story. By now everyone knows Superman comes from the planet Krypton, has the Lois thing, etc., etc. A total waste of time is the segment where Superman apologizes and makes it up to Lois for leaving in the first place by flying her around, borrrrring.

I'll buy the DVD and skip that chapter.

I am not sure if the sound will be as good on DVD as in that IMAX. Yes, loads of LFE and lots of power behind it, just not sure I heard LFE when he flew except at breaking the sound barrier a small pop to go with the visual effect of the compression wave. If care is taken, it should be a good one audio wise, hoping anyhow.:D

I saw Superman Returns on Friday. It was good. Was it Great ? No. Was it bad? No. Its a good big-screen film. (I don't go to movies if the visuals are not worth the 50 ft screen).

I was never a Superman fan. I was more into X-Men, Ironman... The old Superman comics were too sweet and cuddly for me. Too perfect. The movie is the same. Too sweet and perfect. No surprises.

Lame!!!

Just saw this movie today, and I almost fell asleep! Hardly any action at all! It was more of a chick-flick. Lex Luthor was in the movie for maybe 15 minutes total. Plus half the movie was just complete re-hash of the original Superman movie! Was this a sequel or a remake?!?!

I can't believe they spent $200 million on this turkey. It had some good special effects, but the close-up CG shots of Superman looked kinda cheesy. Waste of money in my opinion. Unless you're planning on seeing it in IMAX, I'd wait to rent the DVD.
