If I where you I would stay away from powered towers. They may sound good to you now, but you will regret it in the future. I've been through that. Get some good towers and a sub. There is no substitute for a real sub.

But what would make the Def Tech speakers with the built in subs so difficult to set up?
Because of how subwoofers interact with the room they require careful placement to sound their best. To get your speakers configured in a way where you can enjoy a well positioned sound stage and maintain excellent performance from the built in subwoofers would be a task. Seperate subwoofers are often better because you can place them where they sound best and not have to worry about it affecting your sound stage.

More than anything I'm trying to show you a system that has flexibility and the ability to upgrade.

Going with an outboard phono stage does not make things more complicated. It creates more options and flexibility. Not complicate things.

If you really like the Onkyo then go with it. Its a good amp. Just not what I would have chosen. :)

But please go listen to more speakers than the Deft Tech's. This is what will ultimately determine your systems sound.
Gotcha. :)

Thanks everyone for all the advice and opinions so far; I will consider something other than the Def Techs for the two channel rig, now that I am hearing all the feedback. :)

I'm a pretty big fan of this unit. I just got one for my office and I love it.
Yes, I looked at this unit, adwilk; nice piece. Definitely a nice piece.

I didn't pull the trigger on any amp yet for this secondary system, so I'll add the Marantz back into the mix...;)
