Sky Q, Playstation 4 and non uhd compliant blu-ray surround sound

Hi

I am hoping someone can help me here as i am not very technical minded.

I have recently moved to sky q and with it i get UHD channels for free. My current set up is all via a non UHD compliant 5.1 surround sound Blu-ray player. The model is Samsung AH64-05291B. On the back it has a Digital Audio In, 2 HDMI ins and 1 HDMI out.

My TV is a Samsung UE40M/U6400. On the back of it, it has a Digital Audio out (optical) port, 2 HDMI ins (1 & 2) and an HDMI in 3 (ARC).

I also have a PS4.

I am obviously wanted to view any programmes in UHD where possible, but also want to keep my surround sound set up, and I am hoping to be able to do that without having to buy a new UHD compliant surround sound system. I believe it may be possible by using an optical cable and changing some of the settings on the Blu-ray (to D-IN?) and on the TV (Select Dolby Digital as digital output format?) and make sure i turn down the TV volume. However I just can't seem to get it all connected correctly.

Does anyone know if what I am trying to achieve is do-able with the equipment I have and if so what wires need to go where and what settings I need to put on each device

many thanks

John

Hello and welcome. Try connecting all of the devices into the TV directly using HDMI cables. Then, use an optical cable to the blu-ray/AVR combo. Make sure to go into the TV Sound settings and switch the audio output to Optical Out. It will be set to TV Speakers by default. See if that works for you. In the TV’s advanced sound options, you may see DTS Neo 2:5. If you select this option, the TV will send two channel PCM and dolby audio out as DTS 5.1. This will be helpful if the player/AVR combo does not have an upmixer for two channel audio. I think you mentioned not getting any info to your sub in another forum. I hope you work it out.

I agree that running a optical cable between the TV and the Samsung kit is the way to go. From looking online, it doesn't appear that the Samsung kit has HDMI ARC on it, so the only way to get audio from the source to your Samsung is by using optical audio cable. Do not buy another home theater in a box ever again and please ask before purchases as this will save you some potential headaches in the future. Remember, when your Blu-ray player breaks, there isn't an ideal way to fix/upgrade things and your HTiB kit will need a separate BD player.
