Sky is looks like is pulses on new OPPO 981

I just got the OPPO981 and connected it to my SONY KDF50E-2000 and when I see the sky in the video (The Living Sea) it looks like a pulsating motion, it is not crisp or smooth. When it goes to a shot of the ocean there is pulsating. The movie is fluid but it is like you see a ghosting of pulsating lines in the background. It is kind of hard to describe. I am running the supplied HDMI cable straight to the TV. I have the OPPO set to 1080i. I haven't did any major adjustments to the dvd player yet. I like the player so far, I just think I am being to finicky.

My first suggestion would be setting the Oppo to 720p I don't know if its the problem, probably isn't, but that would be the native resolution of your screen and probably make the image look better. Also, I would check out another movie and see if the same effect happens.

Have you calibrated your TV? Sounds like you have something set up incorrectly, most likely the sharpness control.

the e2000 uses 720P for its native format. At 1080i, you're scaling up from your DVD player and then back down in the TV. it's probably causing some issues. I use a Toshiba HD-A1 on my E2000 at 720P for the same reason.

Macroblocking is on the source.

RPTVs (of any kind) will enhance it. It just happens to be that DLPs are the worst offenders. But again, all RPTV have MB enchance.

Oh, and the 981 of course as well

981 should be better with macroblocking, since Oppo recommends the 981 and the 971 for DLP vs the 970 because of MB issues due to the fact that they use the Faroudja processing. That doesn't mean it can't happen. As noted, switching to 720p should help a lot.

I checked out 720p and the same thing happened. I will try to adjust settings and where do I find out what firmware version I have. To me the 1080i seemed a little better, but I will check back and forth. My tv is a lcd projection I don't know if that is the same as DLP.

Do you have a different DVD player you can compare to and see if it is the Oppo or the TV?

LCD projection is not the same thing as DLP, other than the fact that they are both rear projection. I might try Oppo technical support as they may be able to give you some insight.

There are some know issues with "macroblocking" using certain technologies together. A number of folks have mentioned the macroblocking feature and DLP sets.

Your Sony isn't a DLP but I think the 981 does the macroblocking thing, which still might have some effect on LCOS based TV's.

That wasn't what they said when I was there in person picking mine up. That's also not what they told a friend of mine who has a DLP set.... I have a CRT though, as well as the fact that I would use the SACD/DVD-A capability, so he said the 970 was a better choice.

I heard another person say the same thing about MB and the 971/981, so I think I will have to call them and see what they say. There was nothing about it on their site.

I have seen differing opinions regarding macroblocking and what sets seem more affected. More consistently plasma and DLP have been mentioned as prone to the problem and less so with LCOS/SXRD. I am looking at a new upconverting DVD player to be used with a JVC rear projection 720P TV. Any thoughts regarding the Oppo vs another DVD player? I am tempted by the Denon 2930ci but the reliability of Denon has been a real problem recently.
