64" is intense. Following THX standards would suggest that .66x your seating distance would be the WIDTH of your display... That's 64" wide - not diagonal.

But, THX also demands that your source material and the screen (not just one or the other) be about 1080p or a bit better for optimal image quality. Quite realistically, this is excellent for a dedicated theater. But, you simply aren't in that situation. There may be times you wish you went larger than 50" but for the most part, you will find that size to be relaxing and won't encroach on your room as much. Larger screens in smaller rooms DEMAND to be watched.

I guess I don't see it asked - but if this room is a dedicated viewing only area, then perhaps going bigger would make sense. But, if this is your family room, then 60+" would really distract from social situations where you are just trying to 'watch tv'. Like a football game or something. Plus, DVD is not HDTV - so you have that as a fairly serious issue when you get to the THX standards sizes.

64" wide?! Great googly moogly! That's like 73" diagonal! It wouldn't even fit in my space! Yeah, I'm not even contemplating that one, BMXTRIX, but thanks!

The room in which the TV would be is the living room. I live in an apartment building, and there's simply no room that would make for a good dedicated viewing room, i.e., a room in which I'd want a projector -- that's for the day that I buy a house, one with a room dedicated for the HT, but that's a long way off, methinks. So for now, it's in the living room, where we do host little gatherings and parties and such. I can understand how a large screen would be distracting, but during parties, I wouldn't even have it on -- just the sound system.

AVRat, I couldn't open your link, but thanks anyway.

Sigh. Looks like a 50 incher is in this kid's future . . . :)

supervij, our 100" screen is in our only living room(measures 17' x11')and our rental house is quite small(3bedroom, laundry+toilet, 1bathroom, kitchen+dining room, and 1living room). So our only living space is our dedicated HT room, so we have no choice but to host gathering in our HT room:D , unless the weather is fine, then we migrate to the BBQ;)

One day we'll have our own house with heaps of living space to have a separate dedicated HT, but being the impatient person I am I couldn't wait that long:D

cheers:)

MACCA (I almost typed in "Paul" by accident!), that was a great post -- made me laugh. Especially the mention of you being the impatient person who couldn't wait!

I love the idea of having a projector and screen in our living room, but considering the crazy layout of the place, I simply can't control all the lighting. There's a TON of natural light coming in through the windows. With heavy curtains, I can eliminate that, but lights from other rooms (dining room, kitchen, den, hallway and entrance) spill out all too easily into the living room, which has no doors -- very open concept. And I'm far too accommodating: I just can't tell my roommate to not use any of those rooms when I'm watching TV/movies. He's got a life too, blah blah blah.

I wish I could post a layout of my space; you'd see how difficult it would be. But I really do think a 100" screen would be too dominating in my tiny living/dining room -- about 300 square feet, I think. Being dominated is sometimes a good thing, I imagine, but that's a whole other thread.

Cool that the setup works for you, MACCA, more power to you. I wish it could be me!

cheers,
