Simple TV sound upgrades?

I'm wondering if there is a simple solution to give my Panasonic Plasma better sound.
TV/movies are not a big emphasis in our life and I don't want to go the 5.1 route. Rather, I'm just wondering if there is a good plug 'n play product out there which would make a bit of improvement. I guess a sound bar is what I am looking for and I'm guessing Best Buy or Fry's is the place to find one (maybe even Walmart).
Open to suggestions (if it is not too offensive to consider such lowly gear:eek:)!
Thanks,
Kurt
PS - Would like to keep this around $300 or under.

put some computer speakers next to it and see if that does what you want.

Good thought!
No reason to go with a bar when active stereo should do and the competition in my price range is much better for computer speakers.

I know this sounds a bid crazy, just add a sub. I watch TV or a Movie a lot of times just with the speakers from the TV and the sub and it sounds good.

active studio monitors. problem is getting up to control the volume. OTOH, I've heard some TV's can actually adjust the preamp signal to the rca preouts. might as well ask Panasonic, or give it a shot with some computer speakers lying around. Maybe the computer speakers are adequate for you, but if you don't have an extra set, and need to buy, I'd go for the monitors, albeit at greater cost.

Is AudioEngine a good option?
It looks like I can get a pair of A5's for $250 shipped.
But good thought on the remote situation. I'll have to check that.

when i bought my SWANS, i got some free mk1080 computer speakers.

man, let me tell you what. these things can put out some sounds. and if you put em close to a wall (mine are mounted free air), you could get some very noticeable bass. have em on now, though palladia is playing crap. was watchin NASCAR.

the tv controls the volumn.
