Hi All,

I've had a read about what makes good cable but still can't put the information into practical terms. (my fault I'm sure). Can anyone give me some simple things to look at when buying cable eg. what specs to look at that will be displayed on the cable or cable drum. I'm planning to build a new home and want to run A/V throughout the house. I'll be running A/V from the Zone 2 out of my main amp to another room to be controlled by another amp located in the other room.

Hope this makes sense.

Thanks,
Wayne.

The only specs are the gauge of the wire (the lower the number the fatter the wire) and whether or not it's shielded. Fatter is better up to a point.

For speakers, 12 ga. will do for any domestic application.

Shielding might be nice for in-wall wiring to guard against possible interference from your AC wiring, or if you live near a radio transmitter tower. If I were doing the job I'd go for shielded wire just for the peace of mind (and because I'm slightly obsessive).

Coax cable (like for your cable TV hookup) is good for just about everything audio.

The cable article here by Dan Banquer is worth reading. He makes a good case for shielded microphone cable.
