Hello everyone

This is my first post, I have been looking for a while so I thought I would sign up.

I was really into home theater years back but I kind of steered away from it for a while but I'm starting to find my interest again.

I was starting to upgrade and I noticed the DVD players now are a lot cheaper and maybe better than the one I own. I paid 900.00 for mine but I'm starting to think I can get a better one for maybe a couple of hundred.

I've been hearing about progressive scan and stuff like that. I think my unit is out dated. I've owned it for about 7 years now, it can't even read my dvd-r's

So should I upgrade? I'm looking for the best picture quality here.

Thanks for reading

If you need a DVD player that needs to read DVD-R, and what you have doesn't, then you need to upgrade. But, nothing wrong with having two :)
If your TV can do progressive pictures, not all can, then again, yes.
If you are into DVD-A/SACD, then yes, you should :)
So, if your present player doesn't meet all your needs, time to upgrade :D

Alas, it's time for the pasture.

The build quality of the Sony S7000 is absolutely fabulous, and it would be a crying shame to turn it into a boat anchor. Sadly, the $89 Sony bottom of the line DVD player at your local department store has higher resolution video DACs, component video output, compatibility with DVD-R/+R/-RW, probably plays back MPEG/MP3/WMA Files, and probably works with the same remote control you've known and loved all these years.

Your Sony S7000 was the cream of the crop 7 years ago - I know because I wanted one so bad I could taste it, but couldn't find one for sale anywhere, and settled for a Pioneer Elite DVD-500 at the time. At $750, the Pioneer was an expensive player.... and I replaced it with a $129 Sony single-disc DVD about 2 years ago due to lightning striking the Pioneer. I'd never go back to the Pioneer even if it was repaired, the increased video quality on the cheap Sony was leagues ahead of the Pioneer -- not to mention the benefits of newer technology, component outputs, higher resolution DACs, etc.

Time for an upgrade!

I'm in the same boat. I have a 7000 (bought when it first came out) and am currently building a dedicated HT in the basement. Once finished I will be getting a new DVD player. I have hit the same problems you have. The 7000 will be a backup player in the living room.
