Should I sell my stuff?

Hi guys!

wanted to ask for some help deciding on the future of my HT equipment.

I had to move recently and for the last 2 months I have been living in a tiny apartment so all my stuff had to be left behind until I found a decent place for the family, well I have found it and now I am beginning to plan the transport of everything I own from one place to another.

here is the deal , I received a call from a friend asking if I'm interested in selling my HT equipment to him

I am undecided because I like it so much, but there is the small possibility of damage during transport

so here is where you fine people come in, what would you do in my situation??

sell and switch equipment just for the fun of it or keep what you already like and trust?

here is the list of what I would be selling:

Fronts: B&W DM603 S3
Center B&W LCR600 S3
Surrounds B&W CDS6 S3
Subwoofer B&W ASW 650
Receiver Rotel 1057

I paid about $3,900.00 around 8 months ago and the offer to buy is for $3,000.00 is this a good deal?

I would be able to upgrade to something in the $5,000.00 range but really don't know what I would get right now.

thing is that I'm still really undecided and I have to make a decision fast please help a fellow member out.

Thanks!

Hmmm, tough decision! If it were me, and I really liked my gear, then I'd keep it. It can be difficult finding a set of speakers that you really enjoy, and once you have, I say stick with it - until you grow tired of them. Also, taking a $900 loss after eight months would be too much for me...if I liked the gear.

Now, if you've got the itch to upgrade, then maybe it's not such a bad move to sell it. You could look at it this way - you got to use the equipment for eight months for a rental fee of $112.50/month. Not too shabby for nice equipment, and now you have an easy way to sell it and upgrade to something else.

Ahhh, I'm now starting to understand your dilemma. Bottom line from me - if you like the stuff, keep it.

exactly right!

That's what I was thinking take it as if it was rented and get an upgrade , decisions, decisions...

A $900 loss for a $3900 purchase is only 23%. Electronics resale is generally like furniture - even though it still has value to the owner, it's resale value is practically nil. So from that perspective, selling it all for a mere 23% loss isn't such a bad economic decision at all. I'd expect to lose more like 50% or more.

Now, how much emotional satisaction do you get from the current setup that would make you long to hold onto it? Keep in mind that equipment gets better and cheaper over time and the $3K you get for the current setup could very well get you to the next level if you wait just a little while.

I'd probably sell and wait a little while to regroup and then start again.

Packing & shipping the gear will run you several hundred dollars making the $900 loss even smaller,if it were me i'd take the small loss & buy different gear.

As MDS pointed out resale on electronics is from 30% to 70% loss at resale depending on the gear, take the $5,000 you can spend on new gear & buy used gear from Audiogon.com,using the search function you can look for gear by zip code that you can see/hear & pick up in person,by buying used you can easily get $8,000 to $12,000 worth of gear & never know the difference from new.

A good 80% of my collection of gear was bought on Audiogon, ive purchased well over 50k worth of gear from that site & sold twice as much,if your shooting for local in person pick up then feedback is meaningless as there is no way to get ripped off,if you plan on shipping an item from a seller you can ask for a COD deal where you pay ups once the gear is at your house, most established sellers will accept a cod with a deposit & shipping in advance.

The Audiogon staff is unlike ebay, they are very active in the policing of the site,if the administrators see a questionable ad they pull it on the spot,if a member reports a scam they pull it on the spot, scammers do not last long on Audiogon as both the membership & admin is extremely aware of scammers & con men,Audiogon is 1,000 safer than ebay.

Most sellers will do a COD but add an extra charge for the headache,i usually offer an extra $50 to $100 for a COD when im buying & charge the same when im selling.

I say sell it, and then buy $3,000 of your next setup. Lets say mains, receiver, and sub. Then build the rest in slowly. Easier on the wallet.

This man knows!

I say sell. You're return on investment though a loss I think is not so bad. I agree you will have to package and ship and all the extra hassel. I would say the highest percentage of things dammaged durring shipping or when someone moves their house. something always gets damaged. it would beterrible if it was your system. Call it a 900 dollar garuntee that you can have 3,000 dollars of system back. Plus if you have the extra cash in hand.. upgrade is what I say! you can then design the new system for the new room and so on and so forth.

I think you stepped into a great deal there sir. JMHO

Keep your current equipment if you like it! Is this a case of upgradities perhaps? The key sentence to me is "I am undecided because I like it so much". Perhaps auditons of speakers in your higher price range will help with your decision.

It depends...

First thing to consider is where are you moving to... I just relocated to the USVI, it's great here and I love it... but not much of a selection of toys here (one of the trade off's) and many companies won't ship here...

I left most of my old AV stuff with my mom and packaged my projector myself (before leaving)... it cost me about $51 and change... I had her mail it experss USPS w/ins of original MSRP... No problem... however don't get me started on how much my 8x8 ft Da-lite was via UPS... I recently found out that CC delivers to ALL US Territories, Proveces, and Military Bases now (question is for how long)... and I just bought something that arrived on time (very unusual for the territory)...

If your staying on the main land your on easy street... you have the option to just dirve to various stores and get stuff or just have it delivered...
Where I literally got to get things shipped (and wait forever) and/or pay extra for plane fare...

I'm one for if it works and you like it... Keep it!!!! And if your gonna run into some cash later up grade something else... a projector/ TV for another room or outside / a motorcycle / BBQ pit / Beer and Strippers / a Beer Monkey / whatever!!!! Your gonna hassle with package it if you move or you COD it either way... and heaven forbid if something goes wrong with the stuff with your buddy (weather he messes somthing up in trans or connection or by its self) you just lost a friend... GOD FORBID IF ITS A TRUE DRINKING BUDDY!!!

It really comes down to where you are going... if your gonna package it do it yourself and most importantly do it right (don't try to save a few coins by ruining your stuff in trans or think someone else even cares)!!!! And your buddy... thats dangerous!!!!!

Once again if you like it and know it works... keep it... Either way do your homework and think it through... everyone is gonna have an opinion, good and bad!!!!!

I've bought and sold a lot of stuff on Audiogon too. As long as you ask a lot of questions and if possible, deal local as HighFi said, you should be OK.

I had the same equipment as you except i had/have the rsx1056.Upgrade hit and i upgraded my speakers only. But i had them alot longer than you have had yours. If it were me i would offer the speakers only and keep the reciever(it's a good one). The best upgrade would be the seakers anyways in my opinion.Just be sure that you like your next setup over the one you have now.Believe me people have upgraded only to find out that their previous setup was more enjoyable.

You know you will upgrade, it's just a question of when. The longer you wait, the less your current gear will be worth.

I say sell.
