I must also depend on what you listen to.
For starters i don't listen to CDs...I listen to mp3s.
I do watch just as many DVD's as DIVX rips but even many of my DVDs have 50% of their content washed out.
TV comprises most of my A/V activity and it's just a dirty old s-video feed.
So spending $5000 on a 5.1 system might be a little overkill i think because 90% of the time I simply am not watching or listening to a high enough quality feed to exploit the speakers abilities.
Remember...garbage in-garbage out...regardless of how good the equipment is.
