It is a 1997 Kenwood 107VR and the only modes it has are Dolby Prologic and Dolby 3rd Stereo NOT even Dolby Digital Maybe DTS? We also have a H/K AVR-55 which is Dolby Digital. The H/K could NOT be compatable as it is only a 55 WPC Receiver and my dad Has a pair of Bose 301's a Kenwood Center Channel, and two rear Kenwood Surround Sound Speakers NO SUBWOOFER. Since we get along well I would be more than happy to give him my old Entry Level Yamaha RX-V363. He doesn't seem really ready to upgrade but do we NEED the Upgrade?

In my opinion, there's always room for improvement:D! I feel the need to upgrade even when I buy a new item for the home theater. Give him the Yamaha and help/convince him to upgrade the speakers and sub.

Well, that depends on what you/he listens to, from what sources and how important surround sound is. If not that important to him, then no.;)

I will certainly try and offer I already have offered it to him many times before. Now I know he won't go out and buy new speakers he only likes Bose and he just now told me he has no use for a Sub. I bought the Yamaha new for $220.00 at Bestbuy in the winter of 2008 and have no future plans to use it myself.

We listen to mostly Classic Rock We both like having Surround Sound when we are watching movies. I tried convincing him to buy a higher quality Kenwood used. like a VR-6070,309,Sovereign. I also would reccomend Onkyo which he doesn't like. Anything is better than nothing but definately NOT Sherwood! Most new 2010,2011 Model Year Receivers would be the perfect choice. He listens mostly to the radio,CD's. I listen to everything from Records all the way to CD's

My real nice Receiver from the bay has arrived won't be using it for Surround Sound though as I don't have the capabilities for home theater. Also have another Receiver my dad could use a Budget model Harman Kardon AVR-55 Sound is poor for both Stereo and Surround Sound Applications.

OK. Do you watch movies on DVD or BluRay? How good are your speakers?
If you still used DVD, not much gained from upgrading.

I doubt you will benefit from a modern receiver with the latest audio codes as they are just not on TV broadcasting nor on DVDs.
Now, when you do upgrade to a BluRay player and get a good sub that rattles the roof tiles;) then you should consider an upgrade.

In response to the thread title you should not be convincing anybody to do anything with anything that plugs into a wall ... that probably goes for toasters too. I'm not sure if your either a troll or 8 years old but those little red squares are hard earned. Congrats.

A few month back I got the 301's (in like new condition) for free, and guess what I ended up doing with them, giving them away for free.

No he isn't interested in replacing the speakers. Sorry to waste your time But a Dolby Digital,DTS Surround Sound Receiver wouldn't be a huge STEP UP from Dolby Prologic?
