Should I buy a new AV receiver

This is my first post on your forum. I am thinking of replacing my older analog projection TV with a Sony RDS R60XBR2. I currently have Direct TV, a Panasonic Elite DVR 57H and a Panasonic Elite DV05 DVD player and a Yamaha DSP A1 receiver.

I know a new receiver would permit me to connect all audio and video thru the AV receiver but I am reluctant to spend another 1600-2000 dollars at this time. What do you think of using my old receiver and connecting the DVR and DVD player and Direct TV to component inputs on the TV and using the receiver only for audio?

Thanks in advance

Steve

You think like I do.

It seems that all you will gain is switching convenience. Is that worth that kind of $$?

In any case, by routing the video signals directly to the monitor, you totally wipe out any possibility of signal degradation.

I agree, and in any case, one click switching is just a Harmony remote away. Works great for me.

Receiver upgrade

Steve,
My $300 Yamaha receiver does component video switching and video format conversion (from s-video or composite to component video) just fine so you might be overestimating the cost of the upgrade.
If you want all the latest HDMI bells and whistles, then it will cost you.

I agree. A universal remote will be the easiest way to solve the routing problem. The Harmony 880 works great for me.

Little known fact, and this is based on a knowledge gained a few years ago, is that Denon offers a upgrade program. You send them your old receivers, pay a fraction of the cost of the new one, and they send you a new receiver.

I am not sure of other audio receiver makers, and am unsure of Denons current commitment to this program. I do know that Cannon has a program like this for their high end cammeras.

Maybe you should look into this for your Yamaha.
