Shopping for a replacement Receiver

I have learned just enough about home audio off this web site to be dangerous, please help me. I have a 5.1 Jamo A 102 HCS 12 home cinema system. The receiver (DMR 60) has died and I need to replace. It was a 300 watt system putting out 60 watts per channel. The newer version of it is the DMR 70, using 325 watts and putting out 65 watts per channel. It runs almost $500 dollars though. I am looking to buy a new all purpose receiver that won't damage my speakers and I'm trying to spend 2 or 3 hundred. According to Jamo's web site the speakers are rated for 60 watt long use / 80 short use and they are 6 ohms, but all I can find are 500 watt receivers that are 100 watts per channel, usually at 8 ohms. Will these hurt my speakers?

Are you looking to have all the latest surround modes, like Dolby True HD & DTS Master? Even if not, you’re probably looking at buying used. There is a classified section here on the boards, and there’s always Craigslist & Ebay to consider.

Specs are 100w x 7 @ 6ohms, but I doubt its that much power with 5 or 7 channels driven. Good deals on the 506 'cause the 507 is coming out soon. Mike

So I have gathered that wattage isn't as big a deal as the ohms are from reading some other blogs on this site. Please correct me if I am wrong. Again, my concern is not to damage my speakers.

So long as you can keep that output level under control. I can connected 20 speakers to a 200 watt amp and not worry myself.

Onkyo ?

So after much researching I have decided that it is worth it to spend a little more. My new budget is 4 or 5 hundred. I've been looking at the Onkyo brand of receivers like "Mike19" recommended. Can I get a second opionion just to comfort myself. I'm still a little weary about spending this much money. Thanks

What's wrong with your old receiver? Does it not have a feature that you want/need? Do you want a new receiver with hdmi switching, video upconversion, or hd audio decoding? Onkyo, Yamaha and Denon are all respected brands.

My Jamo unit just stopped working. The DVD section broke one day and then the next day I had no sound at all?

If you have, or plan to get a blue ray player, you would be set with the Yamaha RX-V465. It decodes hd audio formats.

I just found a new Sherwood RD-6513 on E-bay for $250. Is this a Good deal, and does anybody recommend this brand?

I've not heard good things about Sherwood receivers, I would pick Onkyo, Yamaha or denon over the sherwood.

Yamaha RX-V465

alexwakelin thanks for all your help, I just found some not so good reviews about the Sherwood. I've also been researching the Yamaha you mentioned. Their tech specs don't list the Ohms ratings. Do you know if it will push 6 ohm speakers?

I think you would be ok, your speakers don't handle much power and would probably distort before you drove the receiver too hard.

First thing, I can find that Sherwood for less than the price you quoted.

Second thing, it's virtually the same receiver as the Insignia receiver sold at Best Buy for around $180.

Third thing, no audio support over HDMI.

The Yamaha RX-V465 is a much better choice.

Yamaha vs. Onkyo

So the average Onkyo tx-sr506 on Ebay is around $275 and the average Yamaha RX-V465 on Ebay is around $315. Does the Yamaha do anything the Onkyo doesn't for the 40 or 50 $ price difference?
