Shoot Em Up-blu-ray/hd Dvd

For any of you guys that saw and liked Shoot Em Up, New Line Cinema just released some info that might be of interest. The action flick which only garnered $12.6 million on the silver screen is expected to do better in high-def, starring Clive Owen, Monica Bellucci and Paul Giamatti it really didn't impress critics much. But New Line is playing it's cards right, keeping the movie out of the 4Q release stampede and instead going for a January 1st launch. Priced at $27.98 for DVD and $35.99 for Blu-ray and HD DVD.

Though the pricing seems a bit steep, New Line decided to sweeten the pot by adding a long list of features. Here are the features: "Ballet of Bullets" the making of Shoot Em UP, feature length from writer, director Michael Davis, deleted scenes with commentary by Michael Davis, Scene animatics with comentary by Mr. Davis, theatrical trailer, 16x9 (2.35:1) version of the film, English DTS-ES 6.1 Discrete (widescreen edition only), English Dolby Digital 5.1 EX (widescreen edition only), English 2.0 Stereo Surround (widescreen edition only), then the more mundane: English and Spanish subtitles, closed captions etc.

Now for the interesting features exclusive to Blu-ray and HD DVD:
7.1 DTS-HD Master Audio, interactive menus, Picture in Picture option allowing viewers to watch behind-the-scenes footage, and finally an on-screen commentary concurrently with the running feature.

For New Line to have invested so much in such a mediocre revenue producing movie can be an indication of where the studio is going as far as adding worthwhile features to high def format releases.

It looked cheesy but seemed to get decent reviews. I find that Clive Owen is good most of the time...not all of the time. Same with Giamatti; it really depends on the role. Monica Belucci...well she can play whatever role she wants and I will watch her, regardless of acting ability.

It was ok. A lot of crazy, over-the-top action, (gimme a break, he killed a guy with a carrot), but for some reason, I never really got into it. I'll probably buy it just for the Monica Belucci factor though.

I liked the movie. Personally, I think Clive Owen is more bad-assed then Chuck Norris.

I would rent this before I bought it... I don't think I could justify spending that much on a movie I wouldn't watch very often. And I wish the PS3 would support DTS-MA, it sucks to have a blu ray player that doesn't have a decoder I really want.

They are working on that and hope to have DTS-HD MA capability released for the PS3 by the end of the year.

Why New Line is choosing to go with DTS-MA when every HD DVD player and 90% of all Blu-ray players on the market (the PS3) have the built-in ability to decode Dolby TrueHD is something I just don't understand.

Either they are looking to the future, or they made a deal with dts to use their format.

This is only coming to DVD and Blu-ray.

The HD DVD will be released at a later date once the movie has finished its worldwide theatrical window.

This is due to the inability to region code on HD DVD.

This is also why Hairspray and Rush Hour 3 are coming to DVD and Blu-ray, with no HD DVD release date set as yet.

Reviving this but I just watched this last night....one of the worst movies...ever!

Seriously though, I like odd-ball, cheesy movies as much as the next guy but this was just.......stupid.

This movie was plain terrible. Also, like another New Line disc I own (Pan's Labyrinth) it is encoded in DTS-MA 5.1 not 7.1 despite what the disc cover and audio menu claim.

It's so horrible that it's awesome. Bad plot, bad lines, just-bad-enough-but-not-so-bad-you-can't-watch acting, guns, girls, violence, action, nothingness..... It's Bugg's Bunny on PCP.

I actually enjoyed the movie but I wish the ending was more played out...

Agreed about the ending. But the violence and action sequences were so over the top and in some cases, highly implausible, that I found myself really enjoying them. Much like Kill Bill, 300, and Sin City, the stylized violence was fun. Heck, even the love scene had a lot of violence in it.

Clive had some great one-liners, and played his part well, rarely smiling and hating everything. Paul was funny and scary -- two things a great villain should be. And Monica was tough and sensual and very, very watchable. I liked it.

From the moment I saw that guy eat a carrot at the beginning of the movie I knew I had to switch my brain to off. This movie is so oddly entertaining! Stupidly violent in a good way.

I think you have to be in the right mood to enjoy this kind of stuff. About 3/4 of the way through the movie something wrecked my mood and the fun was over.

BTW he kills lots of people with carrots. What do you mean, over the top? It could happen.
