Sherwood SP-155w passive subwoofer playing high sounds

ive got this sherwood sp-155w passive subwoofer hooked to my pioneer sa -1290. it seems to be playing higher sounds then the low bass sounds that i desire.i dont think its a hook up issue as its a basic hook up,input from amp-output to main speakers. there are no adjustments or controls on the woofer. is this just something i need to live with or maybe an issue with the woofer filtering. it doesnt sound bad,but i prefer my sub to strictly concentrate on the low sounds.unfortunatly the sa-1290 doesnt appear to have a pre out for a powered subwoofer.i did find this comment from another user on that woofer i will paste here....

Ive got a pair of dvc sherwood sp 155w mid woofer boxes. I call them those because they play past sub territory. Above 150hurtz, heck they play midrange quite well.

Sherwood markets them as sub modules.

If you don't have a low pass filter on the sub itself and you don't have a way of limiting output from the amp with built-in bass management (some 2ch integrated amps with a sub pre-out still don't limit the frequencies, btw), I think you'll just have to live with it as is.

Amazon has some inline low pass filters that are inexpensive. I cannot provide a link because I am now at work, and Amazon.com is blocked. Peace and goodwill.

thank you for the reply , i may just hook up my beast Klipsch speakers for now which will provide me plenty of bass until i upgrade to an amp which has a subwoofer pre out included , i use that system for playing Rock Band 4 in the basement

Can you clarify what sort of connections your sub has? I thought it was a passive subwoofer with only speaker level connection from your initial post. Or does it have an on-board amp and has the ability to use a subwoofer pre-out from a receiver/amp via an rca input on the sub?

Boy, that is an old, vintage 2 ch receiver.
How is the sub hooked up?
It sounds like you are feeding a full bandwidth to it.
