there is no way you can convince me the new sherwood is "high end".

I'll give anything a shot, but i am highly doubtful of it's performance.
Aside from Axiom, Sherwood Newcastle is pretty much only sold by custom install shops. You won't typically find them in regular retail establishments. Their last high end AVR had a toroid power supply and was said to be 'almost' as powerful as the multi-channel amp made to pair with their pre-amp processor.

The lower model Newcastle models are nothing to go crazy about, but their upper end models are very solid.:)

It's not likely that you will, they aren't considered mainstream, or exotic so they get passed up a lot.

Just look at the Sherwood Newcastle R-872 & R-972 thread at AVS forum.

Thanks, I read that thread but it's mostly about 972 and something about 872 HDMI handshake problem but I can't find with what equipment and can't confirm it...

Why are you stock on that Sherwood Newcastle model?

About Integra or Pioneer Elite or Yamaha or marantz or Denon or Onkyo or Rotel or NAD or Arcam or HK or Sony, oups did I say Sony? I meant Sony ES, or Panasonic...
Well, the last one is maybe one too many perhaps.

Anyway, there are so many good brands other than Sherwood Newcastle, don't you think?
And besides, several of them are better in my opinion and cost less too.
Are you American or Canadian?

* I think that it will help if Audioholics will allow to show a litte flag from each member about his country of origin. So we will not wondering about 50 posts later or so, why did I not know that this person was from Brazil.
See what I mean. I found that this situation arose quite often.
Just a suggestion. Of course, you can always write it down in the location, top right corner, but so many people don't write it down and it get confusing sometimes. So, a little color country flag should be mandatory for all members.
Just a small colorful thought.

Exactly, they are somewhere in between, but I can get a good deal on 872 so I'm checking it out but I got nothing....

I'm interested in 872 because it's supposed to have a good stereo sound - do you know maybe another brand in that price range with a good stereo performance?

Thanks!

In the vast majority, if not the total majority of cases, the most popular models are the ones that you can find reviews and discussions all around.

The ones that you don't hear about, are soon forgotten or discarded.

Just a simple hint.

You're welcome.

Hey, you're right - updated my location status :) (didn't find where to write my signature?)

As you can see I'm pretty far away :)

I'm currently using Denon 1508 but am planning on buying a better receiver with these conditions:

1) Good stereo performance
2) All HD codecs covered
3) would appreciate preamp out

Video processing is not that big deal, if the receiver has good audio but bad video capability I would buy a HDMI splitter and that's it..

I'm in a price range of about 1000$ (give or take)

I was considering Denon 2808, Yamaha 863, Onkyo 875 and Sony 5400ES (waaaay over my budget but maybe 2400?)

Thanks for the replies!

The Onkyo TX-SR875 is a very good choice, if you can handle the heat, by giving him some air all around (back & front anyway) to breathe properly, or by adding a small fan in the top rear right corner.

Also, the Onkyo TX-SR876 (I owned that one and love it) is even better.

The other receivers don't even compare to these two. So, that's it.
And they are both within your price range.

The Sony ES STR-DA5400ES has some rave reviews as for sound quality, but it is $2,000 list.

But me personally, I'm not a fan of Sony products, it is against my conscience, period! I don't care at all for Sony products anymore. I buried them a long time ago.

So, here you have it.

Regards,

Bob

Thanks a lot!

Denon and Onkyo are my favorite choices but I think Onkyo is even better value for money..
