Sharp Announces 2013 LED TV Lineup

I must confess that Sharp isn’t typically on my “must see†list at CES, but this year I strolled through had a pretty good time. They were definitely out to prove themselves as the leader in large TVs with the announcement of twenty-one new TVs that are 60†or larger. They also showed off a number of new and/or proprietary technologies such as Quattron, ICC, and Super Bright. Their new flagship model is the UHD ICC Purios, followed by Series 8, 7, and 6 LEDs. The smallest TV in each line is 60" and the largest is 90". As always, they showed off their Quattron technology, but also had demo areas setup to showcase each of their new technologies. I haven't seen a single report that indicates whether all of Sharp's 2013 lineup now uses Edge-LED lighting, or if there are any models that use a Full Array LED backlight.

Back in 2011, the LC-[size]LE63x series had no Quattron, no 3D, and edge-LED lighting except for the 80", which had full array LED lighting. The LC-[size]LE73x series had Quattron, and full array LED backlighting, but only the 735U models had 3D.

In 2012, the LC-[size[LE64x series had no Quattron, no 3D, and edge-LED lighting, and there was no new 80" model, the LC-80LE632U carried over. The LC-[size]LE74x series dropped Quattron from the year before, went to edge-LED lighting, and had 3D. The LC-[size]LE84x series came in at the top, and they had Quattron, 3D, and edge-LED lighting except for the largest 80" LC-80LE844U, which had full array LED backlighting.

Now we're into 2013. The LC-[size]LE65x series is getting 3D. Still no Quattron, and I'm assuming edge-LED lighting. The LC-[size]LE75x series gets Quattron back, has 3D, gets new 80" size models, but are any of them full array? I'm assuming everything in the 70" and smaller sizes will be edge-lit. But what about the new 80" models? And the LC-[size]LE85x models? The new "super bright" panel seems to be their big thing. But is everything edge-lit now? Even the 80" models?

I was really glad I grabbed an LC-70LE735U when I did. The very next year, there were no full array options in the 70" size, and getting Quattron required stepping up in price to the 84x series. There's so much talk about the "slim" design, and this new "super bright" panel, my guess is that EVERY model is edge-lit now - except for the carry over LC-90LE745U 90" model, which is full array. No Quattron in that massive 90" though.

The base model 6 series lacks 3D, which is ok by me, and the lack of quattron is no big deal either. I just want them to bring back full array LED, and bring the price down.

Pardon my ignorance but how can a TV feature 2.1 sound? They put a sub in there somewhere?

It's just like laptops with 2.1 sound. They put a driver in there for the LFE...doesn't mean it's any good though

Yes ... my TV has a sub as well.
It helps but it's no replacement for a "real" sub.
