Setup question on receivers; and recommendation

I'm confused about receivers and connections; maybe you can help me. I have an older denon and upgrading my equipment. The more I read, the more I get confused. Bestbuy is the only place in town....and I get different answers depending on who I talk to.

I'm connecting this new receiver to 5.1, with samsung LED 3D. ; blu-ray; dvd recorder; 5 disk cd; wii; I'd like to connect to my computer/router (needs to be wireless) or ipad, to play music. From the reviews, the following look good:

avr1912; avr1913; avr2112; avr2113; I'm open to others

I'd like to be able to turn the tv on, without the receiver, and get normal sound from the tv. If I want 5.1 sound, then I just turn on the receiver. Same with the dvd player. Today, I have to connect to old denon and connect to tv. I've been told all cables should go to the receiver...then 1 connection to the tv. If I connect my uverse (tv signal) to the receiver, then on to the tv, does the receiver need to be on in order to get normal sound from the tv? Same for the dvd? If I want to get sound with normal tv, does the receiver need to be on? Some people I have talked to say the receiver must be on at all times. Can't I hook up everything to the receiver, and then to the tv with one connectio? And when I want 5.1 sound, I simply turn on the receiver? Is this how it works?

From what I'm asking for, any recommendations on what receiver to go with?

If that is really what you want to do and all of your devices connect via HDMI all you need is an HDMI switcher. The only issue is that you need on with 2 outputs since you want to route all of those devices to both the TV and to the receiver.

This should do it though. You can connect all your devices to this then connect one output to the receiver and one to the TV. Then all you need to do is select which input is going to which output and voila, you have a way to bypass your receiver if you want to or use it.

There is one that is a bit cheaper, but this one supports all video and audio formats, there is one that's 20 bucks cheaper from the same website, but I think it doesn't support some of the higher quality audio recordings or 3D, which is essential if you want to also route signal to the receiver as well.

Like you've noted other people saying, I'm confused as to why you wouldn't want to always route things through the AVR. It seems much more convenient to just keep everything localized through the receiver. You don't have to have 5.1 sound all the time. You can change to stereo or direct and get 2.0 or 2.1 sound.

Edit: No you can't hook up everything to receiver and to the TV at the same time via HDMI. However you could hook up everything to the receiver via HDMI and then use component to the TV as long as the TV has enough component inputs.

All Yamaha receivers have "HDMI passthrough" that allows you to do exactly what you've asked. When you turn the receiver off it sticks with the last source you had selected and passes the signal strait to the TV acting as if the receiver isn't even hooked up. Two drawbacks: you will have to turn the receiver on in order to change your source selection, and this will only work for HDMI sources. I'm sure other brands have this as well, but I am not familiar enough to point them out.

I had to run my HDMI from the Bluray to the Yamaha then to the TV. Then I used a Fiber Optic cable from the TV( I have antanna in attic no cable box) to the Yamaha so I could use the Yamaha amps and play my HT speakers or turn off Yamaha and use the TV speakers for antenna programs only....

Grador if I turn off Yamaha when Bluray is on and have the Bluray function on the Yamaha I get Nothing no pic or sound on TV from Bluray???? My Yamaha is RX-V1900 HD 7.1 AVR new in 2009.

After a quick peak through your manual, it seems you missed that feature by one model year.

I was looking at the RX-A2000 when it just came out but Best Buy had one more RX-V1900 still in stock NIB for $600.00 (retail was $1,399.00) so I purchased the extra two year service policy after all the warranty issues with a Onkyo 805. I must say the 1900 has been a plug and play for over two years now and the 130 wpc amps play my HT speakers great. I was going to use it as a Pre/Pro and purchase a Emotiva amp 200X5 but my small den saved me some money, that and my old Klipsch do not need a lot of power.
