Set-top DVD recorders question

I have Comcast digital cable and have the HD box w/ DVR. I don't know how i lived without the thing before. Anyway... I record a lot of TV shows and I was wondering if I bought a set-top DVD recorder if I would be able to record them onto DVD's for later use. Kinda like what I used to do with VHS way back in the day.

Maybe even be able to take the DVDs and put the video on my computer and then make a nice edited version of all the shows...

thanks

I have the same question in reverse. I have a DVD recorder and am considering renting a HD DVR cable box from Cox cable, and I want to copy programs from the cable box to DVD. You can record programs from a HD digital box without DVR to a DVD recorder, I have done that. The setup is very similar to setting up a VCR to record a program. I should think you could do the same thing with a DVR. The only difference is the program would first be recorded on your DVR. You would then copy the program file to your DVD. I'm guessing the DVR that Comcast uses is a DVD-RAM format and your DVD recorder would also have to be DVD-RAM. Toshiba and Panasonic are DVD-RAM recorders and both companys make very good recorders. I have a Toshiba myself. But my recorder cannot record in HD with the Dolby 5.1 sound. I don't know if there are any recorders available yet to do that. You certainly want to take that into account if and when you purchase your recorder.
