Serious online amp shopping question and more...

Let me start by saying that Gene and you guys in this forum have done a wonderful job in keeping this site as one of the best resources for audio/video questions.
Here's what I hope to get some advice on....or at least some wisdom.

1. Yamaha RX-V2400 is the receiver I am buying after having a pro-logic receiver for 8 years! :) Now, everyone knows that this receiver is between $200-300 cheaper when you shop online from a reliable source. The question is; do you know if it's true that Yamaha will not give you warranty on the product (brand new and factory sealed) if you buy from an unauthorized dealer? Would you buy it online?

2. Can someone explain to me in simple layman terms as to what the pros and cons and the big deal is between 4ohms and 8ohms speakers?? Is the RX-V2400 good in handling both?

3. I've heard generally satellite speakers getting blasted. How good or bad is the booze Acoutimass 5 series as the main speakers, and why? booze is supposed to be one of the powerhouses in speaker technology...I thought.

I would appreciate any input on these questions. Thanks a bunch for your time too.

1. Unauthorized dealer= NO WARRANTY!
2. The lower ohm speaker will get more power out of the amp. The RX-V2400 can drive 8,6,&4. Just add about 20% to the power output every 2ohm drop. This will give you a rough estimate of the speaker choice. Any speaker recommended from someone on this site will be fine with the 2400.
3. You see, some language is unacceptable around hear. Believe what you hear from the speaker & not what you hear from a snaudiot!

FYI I bought my RX-V2400 for $675 from USave Gelt .com. Excelnt and quick service.

Very few units of this class break during the warrenty period anyway and for public relation reasons the no warrenty service is a bit of a cold threat. If a product is bad then the dealer, authorised or not, or the manufacturer is required to make good by common commercial law.

And what zumbo way trying to say politely is Booze is crap.

RXV, I agree on the warranty, I got my 1400 at hypaudio for $551 plus shipping! I am not much on a warranty anyway. I mean, a KIA & Hyundai come with a 100000 mile warranty & a Toyota comes with a 36000 mile warranty!

Mac Guy, I don't think the 2400 is worth the extra money over the 1400! I think it just depends on how it makes you feel. If you feel better knowing you got the Lexus instead of the Toyota, well then, that is what you need to do. The Toyota is made out of the same stuff by the same people.

Zumbo,

Thanks for the reply...my question pertained to the differences between a 2400 and a Z1...not the 2400 and 1400...anyway, I understand your position and to a point it makes sense. I am new to the Home Theater game...my Mac stuff is stereo...but I respectfully disagree with your analogy of the Toyota and the Lexus...the tensile strength of some of the different metals in the two autos is different, the fabric density, the size of the suspension components etc...these are not identical between the two makes of automobiles you cite. There are differences in components...maybe not a difference that justifies several thousands of dollars in retail but there are differences just the same. I have some knowledge about the car industry but not much knowledge about the electronics industry which is what prompted my question about the relative pros and cons between the RX V2400 and the RX Z1. I have a room that's 20 by 16. My Mac amp clips at about 400 a side. I don't clip it often but it does speak with a certain...authority. If I cannot really appreciate a difference of a few watts per channel (headroom) between the 2400 and Z1, are there other discernable differences I might hear that could be worth the extra $$?

Exactly!

What I am saying, is that IF you decide on the 2400, why not save some bucks and get the 1400. Does $200 justify 10wpc?

Anyway, my main response was for the warranty & ohm part of the original question. This was just food for thought. I also thought you were the same person that started this thread! OOPS!

Good Luck!

Be sure to test all "flat" & make sure the optimizer light on the display is off. Around here, people will have the top-of-the-line model tweeked & the lower model flat. Even set to flat, they could still tweek the GEQ to make it seem louder!

Compare the actual size of the power supplies in the units, not the WPC rating. Yamahaluver could tell you better than I, but there is a reason that the Z1 weighs much more than a 2400. I've never compared the 2400 with the 1400 but I'll bet there is a discernable difference there too. I upgraded to a Yamaha 3300(130WPC) from a 620(100WPC) & the transformer inside this thing is roughly 3X as big.

As far as the value of warranties...let your $700 receiver fail and tell me you don't think the warranty is valuable.

No matter how reliable the make NO manufacturer is perfect so field failures do happen. The odds are in your favor NOT to need it but need it, and you'll be kicking yourself over the $200 or so that you save. It's a crapshoot for sure.

Hey JDG, what was the reason you had to return the v2400, and after long? I'm assuming you bought it from an authorized dealer. I haven't got mine yet 'cause for some reason the authorized dealers and companies online have back orders on them. It's like everyone wants a v2400 all of a sudden.

MacGuy, what made you decide to go with Z1, and how much did you cough up for it? I'm trying to learn from you guys here to help me make my decision.

Thanks.

I have a 2400 but it's not my first one. I had to return the first one and I'm dang glad I bought it locally. It was just a matter of bringing it back to the store and getting a new one.

Thx.
