We just got back from watching Serenity at the local theater. The theater aside...

<RANT>I absolutely HATE the "mega-stadium" theaters here, partly because they play everything so loud that their speakers crackle</RANT>

*deep breath*

Anyway, the movie was wonderful. For fans of the tv series (firefly) this movie fits in perfectly where the show left off. For newcomers to the show, the movie starts off with a very brief explanation before jumping in head first.

The movie keeps the same half-campy, rough look that the TV series had, (a very good thing, IMO) and the character dynamic was every bit as important and comfortable as it ever was. Unlike most sci-fi movies, this is definitely a character driven movie, rather than a special-effects showcase. The technology and effects fade nicely into the background, serving to further, not dominate, the plot.

I highly recommend this movie.

Glad to hear it. A friend turned me on to the series & I have the DVD set (couldn't take the darn things out of the player until I was thorugh them all). I plan to see it in a couple of weeks & have been watching the Sci-Fi teasers over the last month.

'Serenity' has finally been released to DVD, which the missus and I rented yesterday. What a nice way to spend Christmas Eve!! :)

The movie was every bit as good as the series and more. Oh, and in the home, let the subwoofer roll!! There was some outstanding LFE in the track. All in all, this is a MUST HAVE solid hit. Joss Weldon is an amazing director/writer. Acting, lighting, CG and other Fx, audio mastering, etc., everything was first-rate.

If you haven't seen it.....run, don't walk, and get this movie pronto. You'll thank me.

Finally?! It came out 2.5 months after it was released in the theater! :)

I watched the series back to back over a few days because I couldn't stop watching it. Even one of my buddies came over and couldn't stop watching it... I think it is so stupid and corny, but for some reason I love it! It is so easy to connect with the characters, and it is definitely a unique idea (AFAIK)

I loved the movie too, it really helped bring some of the stories together that we never got to see due to the cancelled show. My only gripe is that the life story of Shepherd Book never really got explained, I was hoping for a little bit more of his background.

I'm hooked. :D

Firefly is, to me, one of the best shows ever brought to air. I've watched all the episodes at least several times, which is something that's easy to do, since, as mentioned above, Joss is an amazing writer and director. (Joss contributed to Toy Story and Speed, among others.)

My amazing girlfriend bought me the Serenity DVD for Christmas (even though I don't even celebrate Christmas), and we immediately put it in the player and watched all the way through. It's a big, fun, movie, but honestly, quite a departure from the series. The character of River demonstrates abilities that weren't even hinted at in the series. And I felt like there weren't enough character development in the movie the way the series did so well. But a two-hour movie is obviously not going to be able to do this the way thirteen episodes can do. Adam Baldwin's character is my favourite -- he gets such great smart-alec lines. His "I'll be in my bunk" reaction line will, I'm sure, enter television legend as one of the greatest lines ever.

I question Joss' decision to do certain "big" things with characters in this movie, considering that this movie would be the first time most people would meet them. A "big" or "important" change to a character wouldn't mean much to somebody who's watching the movie but hadn't seen the series.

You'll definitely enjoy the movie more if you're seen the series, but you'll still find enough enjoyment otherwise. Despite what I said earlier, it is, I think, the best of all the episodes. Great, great, great fun, stellar special effects, and without a doubt, fantastic characters, with whom you can really connect and love.

cheers,
supervij

I agree. This movie would be a little hard to follow without first seeing the series. I didn't like the changes at all... It is going to make things a bit more difficult if they are going to turn it back into a tv show or have a sequel.

You're kidding, right? They made it pretty obvious that River Tam was going to be an uber-killer. Remember the scene in the series where they discussed how her feats of gunplay were beyond what a human was capable of? And she displayed the ability to read minds on numerous occasions.

I thought the film was wonderful, too, one of the best movies of the year. I just watched the DVD last night myself.:D

Yes, we knew about River, she wasn't the character(s) being referred to. :)

One other thing I love about the movie, 5.1!!! The series isn't so I have definitely been enjoying that!

I was originally introduced to the Firefly series from seeing the Serenity movie first. AFter seeing the film I went back and rented the series DVDs. I absolutely loved them. I loved the episodes with Mal's "wife".

Then seeing Serenity again, after seeing the episodes. It was like watching a different film. I too didn't understand some character developments, but we'll see what happens. But as far as the changes River undertook in the film. I took them as being "unlocked" after the bar scene.

Lol, you have permission to slap me...

Well, she wasn't the character that I was referring to. :)

In the case of River, I agree with you. There was major hinting at what she was capable of and I was glad to see the full development of her abilities. I just wish a few of the other characters would have been "developed" a little differently.

Man, Jewel Staite is looking hot! Looks like she must've lost 25 lbs since the original series. She "developed" nicely.:D

I don't know... I kinda liked her with a little meat on her bones, but she doesn't look bad, that's for sure! :D

Oh yeah! I dunno why everybody makes a big deal about River and Inara (and to a lesser extent, Zoe); I think Kaylee is da bomb! Innocent-but-horny mechanic -- have you seen the episode that shows the first time Mal meets her? "Out of Gas", I believe was the name of the ep. Oh man oh man oh man! Yup, that's the girl for me!

Gina Torres is seriously hot, too. I've really dug here since her Cleopatra 2525 days.

Exactly, Gina Torres character is way too much for Washburn. But I guess that's what made the relationship so funny. I love the episode where Wash stands in for Gina during a delivery and ends up getting tortured.

Inara, is she that prostitute in the series? If she is, then she is HOT, damned HOT! Tripple HOT! I didn't even think beauty like her were even possible until I saw her! I worship her.

I'm sorry guys, Inara and Kaylie are nice, but give me Mrs. Reynolds. A devilish attitude, plus she's "learned her Bible"! ;)

I bet she knows how to make Macaroni salad too!
