Hi I m a new audio enthusiast and would like to know whether seperate floor standing speakers need to b configured in the same manner as a 5.1 with four corner speakers and a centre channel with a sub-woofer or two good floor standing speakers coupled with 4 ceiling mounted DOLBY ATMOS speakers and a sub-woofer would provide the deep rich sound that a good system must offer.
I intend to use the system in my drawing room and would primarily be using for listening to music but occasionally plan to hook it to a projector for movies on a big ceiling mounted screen which would roll up after use.

5.1 doesn't mean 4 corner speakers....it's not a quadraphonic system. Generally L/C/R across the front and surrounds to the sides and slightly behind. Can't have 5.1 without a sub. Atmos you can add to the 5.1 setup, but likely with a 5.1 setup 2 ceiling speakers would suffice (5.1.2)

There is a wealth of information under the AV Research tab. Just about anything you could need to know...

You really should do a little reading. Google "5.1 surround sound".

The idea of 2 floorstanders and 4 Atmos speakers isn't good. In anything mastered in surround, (this is mostly TV & movies), there is a hierarchy of speakers.
1) Most of the sound, and almost all the voices come from the Center speaker.
2) Next are your Left & Right speakers. These flank your TV.
3) Next are the Surround Left & Right speakers. These flank your chair.
4) Next are the Rear Surround Left & Right speakers. These are behind you.

Atmos adds speakers over your head. It's new and there is VERY little material available that is mastered in this format. It is debatable whether it will really catch on or not.

A subwoofer or two are of primary importance. That's the ".1" in 5.1 or 7.1. A sub(s) will make a huge difference in your experience.

One more thing. Floorstanding speakers can be better than bookshelf speakers only because they are bigger and allow for bigger speakers. It is not always the case. There are many bookshelves better than floorstanders. And with either, you'll still need a sub.

I suggest you root around in this site some. Do some searches. Read. Then ask questions about things you don't understand. ;)
