We are almost done reviewing this unit. We also wrote the advanced setup manual for them so we are very familiar with this player. Stay tuned...

Wow, pretty good review for a $150 player.

So does that mean this will be the first manual will actually make sense? :D

The oppo 971- has better video quality, which means or leads me too

OPPO should've just relaized the player and INCLUDED all the features they did from the $199 oppo,

It makes NO sense to have a better player for $150 in some areas and then a better player in other areas for $199.

They should also improve audio quality dacs, having said though it seems
that they are competing quite well.

It's perfectly normal. The 970HD was made to output 480i over HDMI for people using external video processing solutions like external scalers or displays with high-end processing from Realta HQV, Gennum or National SemiConductor new chip.

So it's totally logical that the 971 is a better stand alone unit, while the 970 was made to be paired with better external video processing.

The 970 is an alternative to all those costly 480i over HDMI DVD players out there, and also to avoid having to perform a costly SDI mod to a DVD player.

My 970 paired with a Gennum scaler is way better the my 971 alone. :D The 970 is now replacing my Pioneer Elite 79AVi for 480i over HDMI.

You must not have read up enough, because the 970 is a lower model than the 971, not a replacement or competition for it. They are expanding their market, how is there something wrong with them putting out a quality product in different price classes?

Would this make a decent CD player if using the digital outs? I'd really like to move to an all in one solution for DVD/CD playback.

It really seems like a step backwards. The original price tag is still a great deal so why didn't they just fix the problems with the 970 so that it would be a no brainer for purchase.

It would have made a lot more sense to keep the Faroudja chip and add 480p support via component out and put in an HDMI output instead of DVI.

I was really hoping for more from Oppo.
