Good to here. I have a buddy trying to get back home from Iraq for a little R&R and this eruption has been delaying it.

Well, there is another close-by Volcano, "Katla", that's getting overdue for eruption, and it's expected to be at least 10 times more violent than current one.... it erupts with 60 - 80 year intervals, and last major eruption was in 1918...

Look at the sheer size of this eruption
The Diameter of the Katla crater is 10 Km, or 6,5 miles !
http://www.freebase.com/view/en/katla

At the peak of the 1755 eruption at Katla the flood discharge has been estimated between 200,000–400,000 m³/s; for comparison the combined average discharge of the Amazon, Mississippi, Nile, and Yangtze rivers is about 290,000 m³/s.

How they managed to get color photo of this volcano I don't know.........

It's an increased likelihood of second eruption when a first one starts because of movements in magma and other physical things that I don't understand.....

We're totally grounded here now, I work in another city and can't even get to work.....

Last time Eyjafjallajökull was active in 1821, it lasted for two years, hope it will be shorter this time....

We are indeed very very very small, according to Wikipedia the Krakatau (Indonesia) volcano burst in 1883 had a power that was 13.000 times bigger than the Hiroshima bomb.... (200 megaton TNT)
Sound was so loud that it could be heard in Mauritius, 5000 km away

You people be careful over there.
Thx gmichael... Over here we're very far from this, actually this Volcano is closer to US and Canada than Europe, we're just being unlucky by wind direction which is predominantly in our direction

EDIT: Just checked google maps and I'm wrong, it's closer to Europe than US :p

My wife is flying to the Philippines this weekend. They fly the other way around the globe though. East to west to get there. West to east back.

I don't know what's worse, Iceland releasing ash clouds all over the world, or releasing Bjork. ;)

... releasing Bjork.

I Netflixed a Bjork DVD and hated it. The volcano hasn't affected me at all.

Krakatau is the most violent eruption in historic times. Katla would be much smaller and very different than the Krakatau eruption. The Krakatau style of volcano is different from the Mid Atlantic Ridge subglacial Katla. Katla is literally a source of earths tectonic plates being created. While Krakatau is a subduction zone composite style caldera volcano. People had their eardrums ruptured by that eruption.

Ever heard her sing live? It's not for the squeamish. I've scrubbed and scrubbed, but it still won't come off.

Just found out that ......................... Even Krakatau is a very minor eruption in a historic perspective, like not even a paranthesis in the history of Earth, our planet can be extremely violent and beyond cruel....

The Siberian traps eruption some 260 million years ago lasted for a million years, lava covered more than 2 million square km, roughly equalling the area of Western Europe, claims being that it covered even as much as 7 million square km. Siberian Traps is claimed to annihilate 90% of life on earth, and it took 30 million years for life on land to recover from the environmental disruptions... that's what I call a big volcano....

Hope it's a while till this happens again, or that the earth is now so much more stable that it doesn't happen again.

I think we are quite small when nature really decides to go crazy

I do admit my eruptions are bad, but 90% is a bit high in my opinion. :D

I thought my eruptions were quite bad, and sometimes they are horrible..... but this even beats both of us....

I don't know the facts 100%, I just quote what's stated around Internet about Siberian Traps (or is it Isiberian Traps?), but a volcano that's permanently active for a million years is quite rude, even Alex will stand no change against this
