I've given this question the title "Scaling Computer Input" because I believe that the problem I'm having is a scaling issue, but I could be wrong, as happens on rare occasion.
Having just acquired an Onkyo TX-NR807 A/V receiver, I decided to change the way I bring my computer desktop to my 2-1/2 year-old Sony 32" flatscreen. Instead of going from the DVI output on my MacBook Pro through an adapter to old-fashioned video monitor cable into the PC terminal on the TV, I take the video out via a DVI-to-HDMI adapter into the Game HDMI port of the Onkyo and out to the TV via the Onkyo's HDMI out. When I do so, I get some annoying anomalies, none of which interferes with using the Sony as a computer monitor, but do interfere with using my entire A/V setup to its maximum potential.
The Snow Leopard operating system, which I installed a few days ago, in addition to offering the standard video grid outputs, such as 1360X768, offers 480p, 720p and 1080i output resolutions, and it recognizes my receiver. When I select 1080i output to the receiver (hence to the TV/monitor), I get a sharp, vivid representation of my desktop on my Sony, but the top toolbar with basic pulldown menus either is not present or disappears offscreen. (On Finder, for example, these functions are File, Edit, View, etc.) In order to see the full desktop, I must use the 1360X768 native resolution of the Sony, which offers an acceptable image that is nowhere near as pretty as the one I get with 1080i. I can't bring the toolbar in by recentering or resizing the image through the Sony's Zoom menu. Is this simply a limitation imposed by the Sony's native resolution? Is the Sony, like, six months too old to meet current standards?
