i'm trying to get a system set up....and piece it together over a few months.

i think i've settled on the Yamaha RX-V663 for my receiver.

$1150 is going to be around the best i can do. maybe a 'bit' more since i'm piecing it together over some time.

i've read VERY few cons on the sbs-01 system. this is probably 70/30 (movies/music). room is approx. 12x18x8. with a large opening to a kitchen of the same size...and a hallway.

thanks.

I have had the SBS speakrs and they are a great value, great sound, hard to beat for the money. Should be a very good set up in your size room:)

Yes, the SVS package is very good. Probably the best sub in terms of complete packages that you are going to get in the price range. AV123 and Ascend Acoustics might come close in price, but you are going to spend more with them to get a comparable sub.

thanks for the responses guys.

is bumping the front stereos up to the scs-01 going to make a huge difference??

so across the front would be :

sbs scs sbs

vs.

scs scs scs

huge difference?

i should also mention that i've never heard ANY of these speakers.

this is based on reputation and reviews that i've read online.

i don't know of anybody around me to ''preview'' them.

oak grove, mo 64075 (if that matters to anyone)

it has to be a step up from my 1997 aiwa HTIB....with av-dv75 receiever.

thanks

I think that the scs would be better for the front but it would be fine to keep the backs the sbs.
Not saying that the sbs dont sound good, you would prob. be impressed with either.

Not a night and day difference, but one that will be worth it.

With a larger cabinet and two woofers as opposed to one, this will likely improve the soundstage with the SCS.

I imagine the price difference would be worth upgrading the front LCRs. From all the pro reviews on the SBS/SCS speakers, they seem to perform quite well for movie/HT usage, though if music is a larger priority than you've noted (70/30 movies <-> music), there may be others you want to look into... -TD

Personally, i'd go with Ascend CBM-170's with an SVS sub in that price range. Or Ascend 340's in front if you can swing them.

Pros: better speakers :) Seriously, there's nothing wrong with the SVS SBS/SCS speakers, but IMO the ascends are better. And they're on sale now, you can get 5 CBM170s for $744 shipped. Or if you wanted 4 CBM170s and 1 CBM340 for the center it's $858 shipped.

Cons: There are really no cons, unless you don't like the look of the Ascends. Actually there may be one con...i don't see a keyhole mount on the back of the Ascends, which the SVS have. But it does say they're wall mountable with inserts.

Pair them with a capable sub (like the SVS PB10 or PB12, or Hsu VTF2/3) and you'd have a really nice system.

I'd agree, the Ascends are a better performing speaker, though the price does reflect this. If you could stretch for the difference between the SCS package and a CBM-170/CMT340C package, it would likely be worth it in the long run... -TD

even if the ascends are worth the extra....the scs's up front and sbs's in back with the pb12-nsd.....are at the very peak of my budget.

i'm guessing i'll be floored by the 3 scs's up front....compared to my current setup.

any reservations with going to the pb12-nsd??? should i be saving up for bigger and settle for the scs/sbs setup with my current sub for a while?

room is 2295 cubic feet.

I think the PB12-NSD will fill the room well but if you really want the definitive answer you should send an email to techsupport@svsound.com with your room information and ask them. They are very supportive and honest.

yeah, i've been talking with 'Ron' via email over the last two weeks.
seem to be very cool folks that are very willing to help.
these seem like my kind of people.

Here is what i emailed to them as far as what i was thinking about speaker placement. google sketch is a fun little app. the 30 min or so i've used it anyway.

For 70% movie use I think you targeted the right system from the outset. SVS gives you an honest bang for the buck in that system and I would go with the 12" subwoofer. Audiohoulics thought the system had "stupendous movie perfromance" in Dec. 2005. Their review of the system is at the link below.
