SBR/SBL lights wont light during 7.1 playback

I played HellBoy II with DTS HD 7.1 audio.

The Yamaha's lights for Surround Back Right and Left speakers did not light.
The DTS HD light illuminated, and high quality sound did come from all eight speakers.
The LFE, L, R, C, and Surround Right and Surround Left lights did illuminate.

I am running a Samsung BD-P2550 BluRay via HDMI into a Yamaha RX-V663.

The audio output on the Samsung is set for bitstream "audiophile" which is for HDMI 1.3. The Yammie 663 is capable of HDMI 1.3.

I calibrated the amplifier with the integrated mic (YPAO) and it all tested fine.

I spoke to the techs at Yamaha, and they were not able to help, except to say either the DVD did not have the ability to light the lights, or the unit was defective.

I think it is simpler than that. Any ideas?

Did you select DTS HD 7.1 audio from the DVD's menu?

The disc could be flagged incorrectly, as long as you heard sound from all speakers, then it seems to be working fine. Have you tried any other discs? I know that the RX-V663 can't apply PL IIx decoding to the new audio codecs, so you can rule that out as to why you heard sound from the surround back speakers. I would just get some other discs to test it with. If you happen to have a PS3, that will pretty much light all of the speaker lights up, even if you don't have them connected. My 663 shows PCM and lights up all the speaker indicators, even though I only have a 5.1 system connected to it when I'm using the PS3.

If I understood Glock's post correctly, I think he got it half-right.

AFAIK, Glock is correct in that the 663 cannot matrix the bitstreams from advanced codecs. However, it CAN with mch PCM (if player has the codecs already unpacked/decoded).

The above is perhaps the biggest, single reason that I crossed off the 663 from my shopping list.

So, wspann, while it might be a bit of a hassle, you can leave it as bitstreamed all the time, and for the rarer occasions of having a natively recorded 6.1/7.1 track, change the Sammy's output as decoded PCM. Sorry about the news if it bums you.

Can you tell me why the SBL/SBR input indicator lights are not illuminating (yes, I picked 7.1 from the DVD setup menu) if a DTS HD MA 7.1 DVD is bitstreamed (which I take to mean a raw feed from the BD to the receiver, yes?) I am thinking the disc is the most likely culprit. I should have anotuher one Friday from Netflex to check it.

What is a natively recorded 6.1/7.1 track?? I do know that a PCM feed from the Sammie to the Yammie yields only a DTS signal, vice DTS HD.

Interestingly enough, IRON MAN in Dolby True HD would also do Dolby PLIIx at the same time, which I assume means I had some form of faux 7.1, yes?

This advice is wrong. It should be the opposite. Now that I see my error, I would just let the player decode all the hidef formats, at least if and when Samsung releases firmware to allow internal decoding of DTSMA in that player. (If they haven't yet, you will HAVE to select bitstream when using MA).

Yes, that's a good way to put it.

I hope this is the case.

I meant a "true" 6.1 or 7.1, as in that's what the actual track says it has on the cover, or in the menu. However, I want to reiterate that I had a smelly brain fart when advising.

Interestingly enough, IRON MAN in Dolby True HD would also do Dolby PLIIx at the same time, which I assume means I had some form of faux 7.1, yes?
That's one way to put it. PLIIX is a matrixing algorithm, and while some purists don't like matrixing, its far from a "cheap trick".
