I would pick up an Oppo 981 or 980. I am more of a music guy than Video, so I buy a lot of CDs. There are a several thousand DVD-A and SACD titles out there. You can pick them up at Best Buy or online, http://www.sa-cd.net/home , is a good site. Read the reviews, some are beter than others
I haven't seen SACDs or DVD-As at Best Buy or Circuit City in over a year. You can find them at www.cduniverse.com, www.jr.com, and www.frys.com in addition to the other web sites mentioned here.

The Best Buys around here still have them, though very few at this point. Frys has a decent selection in some of the local stores, though they are starting to dwindle as well (which means good prices).

BMG has a limited catalog of SACD's and you can pick up some Elton John, Dylan, some Clapton, some jazz and some classical, etc. for around $6.50 each shipped to your door if you watch closely for their sales. Very limited selection however.

I am considering a move into the enhanced CD world. What is the latest on the format wars between SACD and DVD-A? And whatever happened to HDCD? Was this a Microsoft owned format, and is it virtually dead?

Thanks
As has already been said, both are all but dead formats. I wouldn't waste your time or money. Just hang with CD's until something new comes around.

SACD and DVD-A are not dead. They are far from robust either. Neither format was adopted by enough studios or artists to be promoted for the masses. Most of the SACDs and DVD-A that are being produced can be found online at acousticsounds.com or elusivedisc.com (to name a couple). The genre for the majority of discs in either format is classical and jazz, though there are some great rock discs that have been produced; e.g., Dark Side of the Moon, Tommy, Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, Avalon, etc). I have a universal player and the audio quality of either format is generally excellent. If your taste in music does not gravitate to classical or jazz then you may not find very much worth buying and certainly not to invest in a universal player. However, I still buy them (I do listen to jazz & classical), but if I had to do it over again I am not so sure I would make the investment in a good universal player due to the lack of variety and numbers being produced in these formats. Check out the websites and see if your genre(s) of music are supported in either format.

some of us listen

I am one of the three people who like SACD and DVD Audio. I picked up Pioneer Elites which play both formats quite well. I built up a small but fun collection of both sacds and dvd-Audios. I haven't seen many issued in either format anymore, and I was disappointed that the recent Genesis Box set was released in surround sound DVDs, but not DVD Audio.

If you don't mind that the format is pretty much dead, but enjoy multi channel high quality mixes and there are albums out that interest you, I say go for it. Just keep in mind that there won't be a lot of music in either format.

By the way if anyone knows the other two people that listen, please tell them I said Hi. I have heard they are out there, but don't have any actual confirmation of their existence.

BostonMark, you can purchase the SACD box set from a few companies in the States, and from Japan. That's how I got mine.

cheers,

I just bought a DVD-A from Fry's a few days ago.

Acura and Cadillac still make cars that play DVD-Audio, so the format can't be too dead.

No, it is not dead but it is certainly not selling a lot of discs after all these years of being out there. So, enjoy them.
