I just noticed that while my Marantz has a 7.1 ch input, by DVD player has only a 5.1 ch output. Are SACD and DVD-A tracks all in 5.1? or does someone make a player with 7.1 outputs that I have not seen yet?

So how would I cable this? Just disregard the side speakers in this application?

Yes, DVD-A and SACD are 5.1 in most circumstances leaving 2 spare front outputs from the player and inputs into the receiver. These could be used to accomodate another 2 channel analogue connection.

Ok so which inputs should I leave open on the receiver? I would guess the side inputs. Is this accurate?

No, don't use the "surround back" inputs. And also, unless your player or receiver has analog bass management, you're going to need something to listen to SACD tracks properly.

Use L&R, SL&SR, C and SW or see your manual.

SBR &SBL inputs are for DDEX or DTS6.1 with one or two exra rear speakers ie. a 6.1 or 7.1 system. These have no use for DVD-A or sacd.

The issue lies in the fact that many players do not properly route the bass to the .1 channel when listneing to SACDs, nor do receivers. It really affects the clarity of the sound (trying to run smaller speakers full range = garbage sound). You might want to think about trying out an Outlaw ICBM found here.

Well, I don't have such an issue nor, does it seem Methost has yet either - he is still sorting out his connections. Confusing him further at this point seems of little benefit don't you think?

To be honest I am about 90%/10% HT to Music. I wont use the SACD/DVDa option that often. So Ill hook it up and see how bad I hate it before I go with seperate bass management.

Thanks for the input though.

Oh .. and GO BLUE!

True, I shouldn't be adding more stuff into the mix. And for the bass management thing, it's only with SACD. You can play DVD-A over your standard digital connection (and even HDMI), but right now SACD can only be passed over the analog connections. If you don't plan on ever listening to SACDs, or at least not till later, then you can disregard what I've mentioned till later.
