What is an easy way to find out if my dvd player can play either type of audio discs. I have a Sony 5 disc changer, about 1 1/2 years old

Any DVD player can play a DVD-audio disc. You just won't get the high resolution stuff if it's not a DVD-audio player. You will get either Dolby Digital surround or DTS surround or both. As far as I know, only a SACD player will play SACD's unless the SACD is a hybrid disc. That is it has a CD layer as well as a SACD layer.

Look on the front of the player. If it says DVD-Audio/Video player then it is a DVD-audio player. If it has the symbol on the top of this page:

http://www.superaudio-cd.com/

Then it is a SACD player.

Or just post your model and anyone can tell you what it can play.

Also check for the 6 analog (RCA Jacks) on the back that may say something like "Ext In".

If it's a Sony it won't be able to play the high resolution recording of any DVD Audio Disk. Since Sony and Phillips developed the SACD format they refuse to produce players that will play the competitions high resolution format (DVD-Audio).

I'm pretty sure that Sony does not make any DVD-A players. It competes with SACD, Sony's proprietary format that they license to others.
