Being in the computer field, LAN admin, technician, network admin etc. I don't know of any way anyone can mess up their receiver with a rs232 connection. You are only going to be able to do what the software allows you to do.

Now, if was to allow you to update your firmware, this "might" be different. but again, properly designed software that would automatically backup the old firmware before upgrading to the new would almost be idiot proof.

I agree with the previous poster. Nothing pisses me off when companies advertise features and then never support them. I am "considering" getting a rx-v4600, and this thread disappointments me that yamaha would stoop to this.

for comparison sakes. My Nad T773 has FREE software available online at their site....not hidden away, in plain sight and available to anyone. It allows remote control of the receiver, but also allows you to save every single settings and presets and what not into a file onto your pc. And guess what, it works.

Granted, they expect you to ship the 60 lb ( with box ) beast back for every firmware upgrade. Which in today's world of the internet and it's options is pathetic.

Why can't they give us a rj45 connection, or nic, heck even a built in modem and you let them have the ip address or just call in using the modem, and they do it remotely. anyways, totally different rant there.

still trying

I finally tried another rs232 null modem cable. Now when the reciever editor software tries to connect to the RXV1500 it turns on the reciever and cycles through some dsp modes... then the sofware pops up the connection failure message. At least its making SOME connection to the RXV. I feel like its getting closer to working :)

Thanks for all of the help and feedback so far!
Nate.
