I have a Yamaha RX-V2500 at home with a set of Polk speakers and a Velodyne sub. I am planning to buy a new receiver, and the RX-V1700 looks ok to me, since it has the same output and comes with HD. Is this a good choice or should I try a 2700 model.

Unless you need HDMI, I really don't see a need to upgrade, the 2500 is a great receiver.

New Yamaha receivers

Then new Yamaha RX-V1800 and 3800 receivers will be out next month. Check out the specs or wait for a better deal on a 1700/2700 model. You also might be able to get by for a while by adding an HDMI switch ($100) to your current setup.

I have an RX-v2500. I use the mains and center as a pre/pro and run the surrounds through the onboard amplification. About 6 months ago I bought a Radiient 4 HDMI switch (see review on this site) and have been very pleased with the performance. They now have three models to choose from at http://www.radiient.com/.
