RX-V2500 and sub hook-up?

I am adding a sub to my system which currently includes powered towers. The concerns I have are what would be the best way to connect sub and make settings on recv'r. I intend on using the single sub-out from recv'r then split into the l/r in on sub using a y splitter. I suppose setting bass-out on recv'r bass management to 'both' or 'sub' would send lfe's to both mains and sub or just the sub respectively, right? Yamaha recommends setting sub crossover to max and using the recvr's bass crossover management. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Would it be fine to connect it as I explained and then play with recv'r setting to see which yields the best results? Thanks in advance.

Yep

I have a Yamaha 2500 receiver as well. I am running full range towers but am also using a sub, which receives its signal from the lfe output on the receiver. I do have the yammie set to where it sends the low end to both sets of speakers, but keep the crossover set to 80hz. From there I tune it with the crossover on the sub itself, seeing as I rarely run it higher. The best thing to do is to experiment with as many different settings as you have time to try, and to also try moving the sub around your room. A lot of people do not take the time to do the latter, and it can really make a huge impact!
