RX-V1500 input question (Toslink versus Coax?)

Everyone, I just got my new 1500 and am going to purchase some cables for it. First some background, I am going to run a DVD player and a digital cable box through my receiver. The manual gives the following options:
1. Run the DVD through either optical or digital Coax for audio and Component cables for video. I am selecting the digital coax for audio here.
2. For cable box it only gives the option of running the sound through an optical connection (I assume this means TOSLINK).

The same page on the manual also says there is an available dig coax connection for DVR/VCR. I am not running either although my cable box is also a DVR.

Here is my question, can I just skip the TOSLINK cable and run my cable box's audio through the dig coax input marked DVR/VCR without screwing things up? Will this somehow put things out of wack with the component video connection that is listed for cable or satellite boxes? Is TOSLINK really worse than Dig Coax? I have read alot of people on this board talking TOSLINK down and would prefer to go with Dig Coax if I can.

Thanks for any input.

You should be fine using either optical or coax. There used to be a difference I could here between the two, coax being better. Nowadays, I can no longer hear any difference provided I use a decent quality optical cable. Optical also has other advantages, such as never oxidizing or corroding. It's really a coin toss, but you should come out fine either way.

There is nothing wrong with toslink cables, in fact they are the preferred connection for long cable runs. If your cable box has a toslink connection just go that way, it's easiest. If you are deadset on going digital coax just read your manual to learn how to assign one of the digital coax inputs on the back of your unit to the cable box. You made a good purchase and I bet you'll love it for years to come.
