Running mains at 60hz

My wife watches way more TV than I do but she only turns on the surround system without the subs. By having the mains at 60hz she gets more bass and in fact prefers not to have the subs on unless we are watching a movie, which makes sense and puts less wear on them.

Audyssey puts them at large so I have to reset them to small and I always set them to 60hz, this is a big no no?

Should be fine. They state -3dB at 33Hz, so they should be able to handle 60Hz x-over.

Not if it sounds good to you. My mains are good to about 35, and I crossed them at 50 for a long time, and even tried 100. I also rarely DONT use my subs. "Direct" is just a little too...dull. For tv/movies the whole system is on too. Yep, even wheel of fortune, etc lol. To your question though, set it where you want to. The only thing is without the subs on the mains mains will just have less bottom end, and it sounds like for mamma, that's ok. Then when papa comes home it's game on!

Sounds good, and it is amazing how deep the mains still sound, there are times I ask the wife if she can turn the subs off if I'm working in my office in the basement and she says they are off silly!

Dayum is all I can say to that. :)

I've been running a lot of test tones from youtube from 100 to 5 hz trying to level match and look for nulls and peaks. 60 hz is actually a fairly low frequency.

I set mine at the traditional 80 hz. I found my subs play the 60-80 hz frequencies better than my mains. I guess there's a good argument for towers in that last sentence... *gives William the hairy eyeball* :p

So she runs the speakers full range how exactly? Some sort of direct mode? Or you can turn the subs on separately and keep the high pass filter for the speakers active? Curious how that works in your setup....

Less wear on the subs is a concern?

I was thinking the same. I would bypass the subs / bass management with direct also, easiest way to eliminate subs without having to change anything else, you just need to force stereo mode then.

I said she runs them at full range, where? I said I have them set at 60hz.

Less wear is not a concern, a wife who would rather have them off is all. Wear was a concern when they were powered by Mark Scifter amplifiers, so I was probably thinking that when I wrote it.

If she had the subs on all the time I would set them at 80, but if there is nothing wrong with 60 I'll stick to that. :)

I have them set to 60hz, this thread was about setting them there instead of 80hz so they sound better when the subs are powered off.

For what you're doing there's nothing inherently wrong with it. If it were me, when the subs are on I'd just change it to 80.

Why would your crossover (or at least the high pass filter part) be active with no sub, though?

ps Or you actually power the subs on with a completely different switch and the avr "thinks" they're still there?

I have a separate switch for the subs so they have dedicated power. I see the impression was I was turning them off in the AVR, sorry for the confusion.

Valid point, I could do that as it only takes a few seconds. ;)

Just trying to picture it; my subs always power up with my system and think most setup that way, so....

I love going in and playing with my settings. I can goof around with it for an hour. I'm definitely learning the menus and have them down pretty good. For most stuff I don't even need a monitor. I just use the front display

I still power my sub amp separately and before the receiver is powered up. But then, I was raised of a time when I was the remote cntrl for the TV so these do not seem like inconveniences.

Also, I've accepted the fact that I am a bit curmudgeony with regard to just about all modern "conveniences" and other things that make decisions for me as to when, where and why. It's silly, I know. Old dogs/new tricks, being what that may entail, otherwise.

Ditto 100%, from the time my parents bought their first TV back in the 60's my father had me as his remote control. Also an antenna when the rabbit ears needed a boost. :D
