Rotel RSX-1067 Problem

Well, it's been a while since I last posted....

I'm having intermittent problems with my RSX-1067. The problem is that the video and sound will cut out for a second or two and then come back on (no sound from speakers and the projector complains that there is no input). The frequency of these events is increasing and is now to the point where the receiver is unusable.

I isolated the problem to the receiver by by-passing the video on the RSX-1067 altogether by using a scaler. After changing the video setup, the sound only would cut out and then come back on in a second or two.

So, my problem is that the vendor from whom I bought the unit, Myer-Emco (may they rest in peace), is no longer in business and I don't know who can evaluate the receiver to see if it's repairable. I have sent emails to Rotel support but haven't heard a peep from them.

Does anyone here know a reputable company in Northern Virginia where I can take the receiver? Thanks!

I finally got in touch with Rotel support. The guy I spoke with was really nice and very helpful. After explaining the problem, the tech suspected that the problem was in the digital board, which processes the audio and video inputs before sending them to the video output(s) and the amplifiers.

Since I had already successfully bypassed the video by going through my scaler directly to the projector, he suggested that I bypass the digital board and use the receiver's multi-inputs for the sound from the L/R audio outputs from my STB. This will bypass any processing and the sound will go straight to the amplifiers.

This works and I am now just using the RSX-1067 to amplify the sound.

WRT repair, the board alone costs ~$500 and the tech estimated ~1.5hrs for the repair. When I factor in shipping costs, I'm between $700-$800 to repair a now outdated A/V receiver. It doesn't make sense to me to repair this unit.

Given this, I now have a Pioneer VSX-919AH-K receiver on the way. It's not top-of-the-line but it seems to be a decent receiver and has component video output so it's compatible with my projector. The receiver has HDMI output for when I eventually upgrade my output device.

Now what do I do with the RSX-1067? The sound quality has always been good so I wonder if I could use the unit to drive 2 zones; one zone with 2 locations using the mains and surrounds and the other zone using the back surrounds only. Input would come in via the multi-inputs and I would split the input connection for zone 1 to mains and surrounds. I just hate to have this unit go to waste.

Please let me know if you think this is a good idea. Thanks!

You probably talked to Mike Sheehan about your Rotel, its a shame things end up with such little value so just find somewhere to use it.............its a killer 2nd or 3rd unit to have around.

I would have replaced it with a newer one. Probably cost about the same. I see alot of 1068s for less than $500 and 1098s are a few hundred more.

The 1068 is an AV processor, no amplifier. And the prices that I've seen are mostly still north of $1500. Where did you find one for < $500? The newer receivers, RSX-1550 and RSX-1560, are running $1999 and $2500 respectively.

Yeah, I loved the musical quality of the RSX-1067 so I think I'll use it as my stereo receiver! Thanks!

I feel ya, I own a 1068 and a 1066 amp to go with it, you got that pretty much in one box and Rotel sounds great. Paid $2300 for both 5 yrs ago and amp held value pretty good but Pro is worth $500 maybe...........but they make a killer third system so I will drive them till they drop!

I would keep it and simply use it as an amp. It has 5 or 7 channel (can't remember which) inputs and it is what I do with one of my (perfectly working) RSX-1057s. The amp blows away 99.999% of AVRs and is a true torodial powered box.

It is usually not recommended to use malfunctioning electronics. The digital board is cutting in and out and will stress the power supply most likely.

If you are going to continue to use it, I would open it up and disconnect the power to the processing board. If you can't do it, I'm sure a tech can.

I have a 1068 I have just taken out of service after fours years use. It is in perfect condition, I have all manuals and remote. There is not a mark on it. If any one would like it we can talk.

I went through an amp issue over a year ago. While there are plenty of shops in No VA, narrowing down my choices was quite hard. In the end, the shop I chose, still took over 2 months to fix my amp.

I know for myself - when it comes to future repairs, I'll send my items into the manufacturer's repair center. They'll have the right parts, and while they may cost a bit more per hour, they should be able to diagnose and resolve the issue faster than a tech that doesn't know the product.
