86 Tony Iommi of Black Sabbath
87 Joan Jett

OK, just for venting's sake, this baffles me. I already mentioned I think Iommi is way too low on the list, but are they trying to tell me that Joan Jett is almost as good as Tony Iommi? Can you honestly compare an Iommi solo to a Jett solo? The catalog of memorable guitar riffs Iommi has created is enormous!

Rush will not make Rolling Stone's hall of fame for one reason:

They are Canadian. Most people in the US don't understand how huge this band was, and still is somewhat, in our country.

What else could it be. Rush are amazing musicians, and there are only three of them making that music. and, they have bar none the best drummer who ever lived in Neil Peart.....uh, oh...a best drummer list now??:)

I would have to disagree, I think there a millions of Americans who love Rush! They are amazing musicians, but the reason you mentioned is off base about the Rolling Stone hall of fame. The reason is that, Geddy Lee has such a different voice that mainsteam people don't have a palate for his vocal range. To me he is like an aquired taste and is 100% original. Has anyone heard of this band Coheed and Cambria? The guy has all but ripped off Geddy!

yes M3...I think you are dead on there. Most people who dislike Rush hate Geddy Lee's voice more than anything.

Funny thing is, I don't know a single woman who has ever liked Rush.

ooops...first I blamed Americans, now women. Didn't mean to be a jerk...:)

My aunt loves RUSH! We saw the "Counterparts" tour, and "Roll The Bones" too!

Much as I love the Ramones, the ability to play three chords extremely fast does not make Johnny Ramone a great guitar player! (Same principle goes to (more or less) some of the others that are basically decent rhythm guitarists, like Joan Jett.

Another useful argument might be: who are the best rhythm guitarists?

- I'd maybe put Pete Townsend at the top of this list, although he is sort of a combo rhythm/lead player.

Others that I admire for their tasty chord work are:

- Ronnie Wood (esp. for his style with the Faces)
- Angus Young (another "combo" guy, in my opinion)
- Billy Joe Armstrong (Green Day)

Back on the subject of the original list, I'd have put Alvin Lee on it. I know that he might be a bit more repetitive and style-limited than a lot of the people on the list, but I still like his blues and rock-and-roll playing. Speaking of poeple named Lee, what about Albert Lee (the rockabilly player)?

Malcolm Young writes all the "repetative" "combo" rthym guitar riffs AC/DC uses..Angus Young is the guy who makes the guitar sing with amazing solos... and cool one hand playing like the opening of Thunderstruck..

My very favorite solos are by Angus, like the live versions of Jailbreak, High Voltage and songs like Ride ON, Let there Be Rock. ...the old stuff was so much more blusier...People say Bon Scott was a better singer..I agree...but Angus and AC/DC were a different, more blues driven band when Bon was there. I think their style changed with Brian Johnson to compliment the more screaming vocals.

Johnny,

Thanks for correcting my error in confusing Malcolm and Angus Young's respective contributions. It's easier to cite good good rhythm/lead "combo" players when there is only one guitarist in the band!

I've also thought of an adder to my above list - Keith Richards. Not really a great soloist, but incredible riffs. It's also interesting to contrast Ronnie Woods style when he was the only guitarist in the Faces, with his playing in the Stones. As a "Face" (???) he was mostly playing chords (or power chords), with some fills, or else he played slide guitar. And he had that distinctive fuzz tone sound. But in the Stones he's asked to be more of a straight soloist, especially in the "mid-years" Stones songs where he is playing Mick Taylor's parts. And so his playing as a Stone sounds nothing like his playing as a "Face".

Well, there are many guitarrists in the list that are not americans, many british in the list.
