Rockin' speakers with detail

I know I need to make up my own mind with my own ears but could you give me some ideas on speakers to audition that are detailed but can be played loud and be considered a good r&r speaker?
I listen to rock, (all kinds) jazz, r&b, and a little classical. 70% music 30% tv.
I love to sit back and listen to the little subtle things but sometime I gotta crank it up for an hour or more at a time.
Budget is under $1000, under $800 would be better. What do you say?

What do you think of B&W DM630? Could get a good deal on a pair.
I understand these have good detail but do they also rock?

Axiom, RBH, and PSB come to mind as speakers that have detail and can peel paint from the wall.

Are you looking for just a pair of mains or an entire home theatre system?

Companies that might appeal to you are Axiom Audio (internet direct) and Paradigm.

Klipsch is another company and is readibly available at many stores and would make for an easy audition that might be your cup of tea.

The first speakers to come to mind were Dynaudio. I think their Audience 52 would be around the budget. I think they are in the process of replacing the Audience line with the Excite line, but you will probably still be able to find Audience speakers at most dealers. Or check out the Excite line I haven't heard them, but I bet they would be at least comparable.

Era speakers may be another option. They take a good amount of power to rock out though.

No size restrictions were mentioned so I'm thinking Towers or bookshelves would work for you. For Rock I suggest you consider adding a sub. A DIY options is the way to go on the sub. I suggest you put 400 to a DIY sub option and 400 to a pair of bookshelves or towers. I will say if you are stretching your budget at 800 then you could look into clearance deals. There are many to be had.

KEF iQ series, Infinity Beta series and EMPs all look like great deals. As far as auditioning. I think you should audition every speaker you possibly can.

It's like buying a car. You should try everything until something just feels perfect.

Then stop, buy and go home happy.

What size room are you in? If it is smaller, say up to 1,800cf a good set of bookshelves and a sub will work well. From Axiom the M22 ($470) will give you plenty of detail. Since you are on a tight budget either a lower cost DIY sub or something like a PB10nsd would work well.

The nice part about going this route is that it gets you started towards an HT should you want to to that way.

Lower cost is relative hehe. I would say a normal sub costs that much and a high cost sub would run more. You can even get a 15" DIY Kit and simply improve the bracing and add some cloth wrapped rockwool and I bet that would be decent and superior to a PB10nsd.

I could get them for about $350. Are you familiar with these? What are their characteristics sound wise? What years were they made? I can't find much info on the web. I would use them for mains.

I am looking for mains. I already have a sub and will buy the rest later.

A friend has Axiom 60's and they sound very good.

I can get B&W DM630 for $350 used but cannot hear them first. Do you have anything to say about those?

I can audition Paradigm and Monitor Audio in my area. Don't like Klipsch.

My music tastes run similar to yours and I listen more to music than movies. You should really go down and audition PSB Image T45s or the T55s. They can crank loud and maintain their composure, are detailed but not "in your face" kind of way.

The Excite line is supposed to be very similar in sound but 6 Ohm impedance, specifically for those who don't have receivers and amplifiers that get a little twitchy on w 4 Ohm load.

The Audience line was technically discontinued last Spring, but they still have some in stock, even if the dealers don't and the dealer cost has been reduced.

I was going to say to look into the Axiom M60's. Keep in mind that Axiom has a discount through their Factory Outlet Store.

Klipsch! New Heritage series is beyond your budget. Used Heresy's with a subwoofer sound awesome with a wide sound stage and detail. Heritage series are really revealing of the weak link in your audio chain. Usually the power & pre amp. My Heresys sound wrong on my Technics AV reciever. Switched over to Carver separates & it's like a different & better speaker.
