Ok...I admit...I saw it tonight and really enjoyed it. You have to check your historical facts at the door since it's historical fiction with the emphasis on fiction, but considering that there are no hard facts on Robin Hood, it doesn't really matter too much. It's about as historic as Inglorious Bastards. Anachronisms abound, but you won't really care.

Russell Crowe is never better as an actor than when he is when he gets to lead his mates into battle and he gets to do it a couple times in this flick. Cate Blanchette is a decidedly un-fragile Maid Marian and Prince John is appropriately treacherous and gets to foam at the mouth a couple times (like you've seen in the trailer a hundred times already). The look of the movie is gritty and sweat abounds. Ridley Scott used his patented battle style that we saw in Kingdom of Heaven and Gladiator. I liked it enough to see it again.

Nothing in IMDB suggests a sequel, but the movie certainly does.

I saw it this am,1st showing, cheaper.:D
It certainly could be a three filme story. This was RH history and introduction. Next, his exploits with the king and the final one his triumph over him.
Didn't read where it was filmed but could have been on the shores of England? Nice scenery all around.

I actually really enjoyed it. I also appreciated that it departed somewhat from the typical Robin Hood story and I, therefore, didn't know exactly what was coming. I for one would also like to see them make this a trilogy. Amazing scenery and great filmmaking.

Yes.....great film! As I was walking out couldn't help but hearing several people doing the 'Gladiator vs. Robinhood' comparisions...lol...One guy said, "well if Gladiator is a 9 I'll give Robinhood a 7" How was Gladiator a 9? If that film isn't a 10 no film is...lol. And I agree with Skiz....Crowe is at his best in those type of roles. I hate the old man overweight roles he plays sometimes...lol

Sorry- but doesn't the whole story of Robin Hood require you to check facts at the door? My understanding is that the concept of Robin Hood is based on folklore and and is based on the actions of multiple people over a period of time (in the same way that the story of William Wallace is really an amalgamation of several people).

Of course, none of this means we cannot have an entertaining movie!! :D Thanks for the review.

My main authority on Robin is Wikipedia and movies, but there was an England and a Prince/King John and a Richard and a crusade somewhere....way back when...that's history, right? As a character, Robin Hood is an example of how the longer you tell an uncertain or untrue story, the truer it becomes. He seems to accrue different virtues in different ages. For the real Robin, just watch.

Too bad he walked out on that radio interview over what his accent was like?
Should have told that guy that maybe he should film the next one;):D

Too bad Robin either didn't know how to write a journal of his life, or if he could write, didn't. ;):D

Folks, got to see this film today. Like many others, I too enjoyed it. Russell Crow is one heck of an actor. That is, he has that innate ability to completely blend in with whatever character/role he is assigned to play. The video and audio were done really well. The plot kept my attention throughout. There were even a few funny moments thrown into the mix. All in all, I would easily give this film a solid B+/A- rating. Yeah, it is that good imho. As such, very glad I went to see it.

Cheers,

Phil

Watched Robin Hood 'Begins' on Bluray from Netflix the other night. Good movie and an interesting take on the story. As for picture quality, wasn't real impressive, especially in the darker and really some of the not so dark scenes. If I were to { but not planning on } purchase the movie, I would probably get the SD version. But we really liked the story. Just my thoughts.

LOL @ "Robin Hood Begins". I read that the other day and didn't understand it until I watched it this weekend. I would say not a keeper, but was a good flick worth renting. Got the BD off Netflix. It was long but interesting and entertaining for the most part.

My favorite anachronism was when the French stormed the British coast, they came onto the beach in a medieval version of the Higgins boats that were used on D Day in WW II. The guys on the boats were carrying swords instead of rifles, but nobody had boats like that in the 13th century.

Yes, I agree. I understand the producers were doing a different take on the Robin Hood story, but come on! They could at least attempt to stay within the realm of plausibility.

I thought that was funny too. My exact words when I saw that scene were "C'mon guys, let's find Private Ryan!" (in a French accent) :D
