I've been noticing the River Cable Flexygy ads on the front page here for a while. Are we to assume that the Flexygy concept has been endorsed by the Audioholics staff as the real deal?

We measured these cables (will be coming out in our Face-Off Part 2 article) and they did very well.

Our advertising department only accepts cable advertising from cable companies who do not promote the proverbial "snake oil".

Thanks, I assumed that was the case, as I tend to rely on being able to go to advertisers on sites that I trust, but wanted you guys to make it explicit.

For example, I hadn't heard of Parts Express before finding it on Audioholics and they've been nothing but excellent.

A little off topic but, Partsexpress.com rules. Very nice and very easy to deal with. I ordered some banana plugs a while back and when I got them one of the packages only had one plug in it instead of two. It was sealed so it must have just slipped by quality control at the maker. I called the help line at Partsexpress and they sent me a new package free of charge, no questions asked. Got here in 2 days. That's service. Granted we are talking about $5 plugs, but hey they have the right attitude toward service.

The Rivercable Flexygy is the first flat cable I have measured that doesn't have ultra high capacitance. It is also one of the few exotics out there that measures at least as good as ordinary Zip Cord. I am hoping to have my face off article up by mid April, stay tuned....

Great! If my SlinkMaster S Blue Stealth Vortex cables don't work out, I might be looking for something else. You might consider including them in your face off, as they seem easy to make, and very cost effective.... I'll know more about the easy part later this afternoon.

I was going to say the same thing when I first saw it. This cable must have won the speaker cable face off good enough to get an advertisement here despite stiff competition from Bettercables, Cobalt Cable & DH Labs. Also high-tech designs and construction from JPS Labs (Alumiloy), Analysis-Plus (hollow oval), Slinkylinks (air-dielectric insulation), & Alpha-Core (patented flat technology).

Pardon my ignorance, but why would I want to pay for an exotic cable "that measures at least as good as ordinary zipcord"? Just because it's flat?

People like pretty cables and who are we to tell them NOT to buy cables that are pretty, and consequently expensive. Don't forget the mechanical quality of the terminations (compression banana plugs don't come cheap).

We have no problem with costly cables provided that they perform well enough to be transparent in a high fidelity systems, and the manufacturer doesn't shamelessly promote snake oils and/or half baked sciences to lure you in.

People like pretty cables and who are we to tell them NOT to buy cables that are pretty, and consequently expensive. Don't forget the mechanical quality of the terminations (compression banana plugs don't come cheap).
I just finished building up my Cat 5e cables- Parts Express has some flex sheathing (which I got in blue) and shrink tubing, thus they look great - very 'high end' (big blue snakes with snazzy yellow ends and gold spades. They also sell Monster gold plated spades that are both easy to use and very heavy duty. I ended up using three lengths of Cat 5e plenum rated (teflon insulation) per channel, and separating out the white and colored wires for each side ( +/-) for 12 solid core wires per. The cost to me to build up a 20' pair of speaker cables was in the range of $50-60, including some special tools, like a continuity tester that I didn't have.

I hooked them up with my new Roksan Kandy amp and Thiel speakers, and.......

They sound great! In fact, I've been hauling my CD's around to every high end store in the area and demo-ing some pretty expensive stuff. I had listened to this same speakers driven by top line Krell and multi-thousand buck speaker cables, and this setup sounds as good as anything I've listened to, even before I've even started tuning the system in.

BTW- the Kandy is a real bargain too. However, as this is the speaker thread. I listened to some CD's that I use- Taiko drums and Jazz, and everything from cymbals to the big drums sounded like they were in the room. The soundstage went beyond the speakers, almost a 3-D effect at times, and the image was pinpoint. One track featured someone moving back and forth across the stage playing a steel triangle or small bell- I could easily track them as they moved and the movement was very smooth- no jerks or jumps in the image. I could easily hear the attack and decay in the big drums, as well as wood blocks (used percussively ).

Obviously the Kandy was a big player here, and the Thiel's do have a reputation of being merciless with substandard equipment. BTW- Audio Advisors sells the Kandy new for a thousand bucks, they list returned/demo equipment on their site (with the 30 day return and full warranty), and I was able to pick up a returned one for $800- it arrived in great shape, looks like new, and obviously works fine- seems to be 'pre-broken-in', considering the sound right from the box. The CD player is a Rotel RCD-1072, and the interconnects are Phoenix Gold platnium level also from Parts Express- at about 30 bucks each, they seem to have all the 'whiz-bang' technology as the mega-buck ones.

I'd be happy to post more details about how I made the cables if anyone is interested. I'm an 'all thumbs' kind of guy, so (quite literally) If I can do it, anyone can.

One caveat... As you know, we do utilize Google AdWords advertising. We can't control the banners or vendors they put in place, so from time to time you may see companies on there that we either aren't familiar with or do not endorse... It's a bit out of our control, but a small enough problem (and good enough upside) that we tolerate it.
