Well, this sucks. He wasn't just a great film critic, he was a great writer. His reviews were often more interesting than the movies he was reviewing. In fact, one of the things I liked about his reviews is if he found the movie too dull to discuss, he would just use his review to talk about whatever he wanted. He could go for large chunks of a reviews without even talking about the film he was ostensibly reviewing. In my opinion, this is a good critique because, in a way, he is saying this movie isn't worth talking about. He could also be pretty savage against a movie on those occasions where he really detested it. If I am looking for a review of a movie online, his is always the first page I turn too, because if the movie isn't funny, or enlightening, or thoughtful, well at least Ebert's review of it will be. A lot of people say of some dead celebrity, "they will be missed", but for Roger Ebert, this will really be true, at least for myself.
