Charles Philip "Chuck" Bednarik, or Concrete Charlie, as he is familiarly known around these here parts, died at the too young age of 89 yesterday. If not the greatest Eagle of all time, one of the top 3, beginning in 1945 at the University of Pennsylvania to his retirement with the Philadelphia Eagles in 1962. One could wax poetic about his football prowess … played both offence (center) and defense (middle linebacker) at the age of 32 on the 1960 NFL Championship team and missed 3 games in a 14 year career … or his wit … when asked about Deon Sanders playing both ways, he replied that “he couldn’t tackle my wife” … but all you had to do is watch and listen to him around the fans, other football players or the various Eagles owners over the years to see his greatness. Charlie was an equal opportunity ball buster and one of the most gentle of gentlemen, no matter who you were. He shall be missed.
