First I guess I should make sure that this is the right section for some turntable questions before I go into a 5 page question lol.

Wow! That's a lot of responses! Sweet. Ok, so here's my dilemma, I like to modify, and tinker, and believe there's always room for improvement. I currently have a fluance rt81 turntable, 100% stock. Had it hooked up in the apartment, bought new house and working on getting back into it especially during the winter. Just ordered new cables from a U.S. company called Signal Hi-Fi, figured the looked good, and priced right, made here, and dont cost $3k. Hooking up to my marantz SR7007. First off, looking to get a new cartridge and headshell, and keep the OEM one for thrift store records, and the good one for new records. Looking up to $200 price range. I know that my TT is pretty much junk, butmwhat can I do for improvements? My mother got it for me 2 christmases ago, and told her I wouldnt "trade up". Leaning towards the VM95ML. As I cant adjust VTA, not too crazy about the ortofon carts. Grado looks cool, and made right here in NY. That's awesome, but reviews show it hooked up to a $3.7 billion record player like the washing machine pick above lol. Worried my little fluance will sound horrible with it. Only thing I will not change is the dust cover and plinth, open to all other mods though down the road. Also down the road might take my marantz out of the loop, hook up my klipsch amp to the TT, a outboard phono preamp, get a 2ch. Amp, and have it hooked up to my paradigms with a selector switch to have both music and reciever hooked up. But that will be a down the road thing. Thanks for any input!

Improvements? New cartridge is the usual route. Or a better turntable/arm....or just get rid of vinyl altogether.

Cables....don't be silly (why did you order new ones....what was wrong with what it came with? Are you keeping in mind the issues with tt cabling?).

Man you live on here hahaha, you've helped me too many times to count. The ones that came with it were a $.99 pair, and one of the channels would drop out from time to time and you'd have to give it a twist to get connection again. I know there's something about total capacitance? And different carts like a certain level?
As for getting rid of vinyl, I stream either from Roku amazon or my tablet with amazon HD service with the internal DAC bypassed (thanks again for helping me with that one lol) but if I really, truly love a album or artist, I'll buy the album. Also think I might get into thrift store album shopping for a hobby (like I need another one.....) just to start broadening my music interests. Plus my future father in law has like 40 crates of albums I'm sure I'll end up with someday. Also kinda like the idea of the klipsch amp setup someday to eliminate the digital aspect. In short (hahaha) I find analog interesting.
I wouldnt be apposed to changing the tone arm someday, just with one with the removable headshell so i can swap out cartridges on the fly.

Yeah I'm pinned by that "seriously no life thing" :). I'm bored but not so bored as to dive into vinyl again....

I will soon have 70 years experience playing vinyl LPs.

My advice is to leave that turntable alone. I think everything is nicely matched. That is a more than adequate starter turntable. That ATC cartridge is actually a very good cartridge and one of my top recommendations to match turntables like yours.

You wasted your money on those cables. Fancy cables are voodoo. I suspect that the cables that came with the turntable have optimized capacitance for that cartridge.

If you want to upgrade your sound then speakers are the place to start and it almost always is. If the bug vinyl bug really bites you, then a total turntable upgrade is the way to go.

They weren't that expensive. $99 shipped. Again, I try to support USA made whenever possible. But yes, I do believe that the $13,000 meter long power cable I saw online last night wouldnt make a lick a difference. However I'd like to think that going from a 99 cent pair to a $20 pair would yield either better shielding or something, also they look pretty in my opinion. I understand that the turntable I have is a joke in the audio community, but like I said when I asked for it for Christmas, I was passionate about it sticking around for a long time. So your saying no ,after which cart I go with it would be a downgrade?

Aside from catridgess, isolation can really help. We have the tt on a section of quartz countertop isolated using three ballistic gel stress balls underneath...reduced feedback at high volumes, even immune to vigorous dancing nearby.

$99 is ridiculously expensive for a pair of cables. You have no idea if they're better than the 99cent cables....

If I don't have to resist and wiggle every couple hours to get the left channel to kick back in, then I'm doing better lol.

Just sayin'....you probably could just have had free ones by complaining to Fluance. The worst rca cables I had were some Monster I tried at much more expense than many others that cost far less....ymmv.
