right settings

Hi everyone, I am new to these forums. I am a noobish 10th grader audiophile and I just recently bought my 1st real system: a Yamaha HTR-5830SL receiver, a JBL SCS145.5S speaker package, and a Panasonic S29 DVD player. I still have a 2 year old JVC 27 inch tv but given that everything is in my room, its good enough. Anyways, I want to maximize the sound quality from my system, so I was wondering which settings are best on my dvd player. What is PCM and what kHz should the PCM digital out be set to? Also, should the DD and DTS be set to bitstream or PCM? Lastly, can anyone tell me what dynamic range compression is and if it should be off? Oh and should my dvd player be doing any AV enhancement or does that interfere with the decoding my receiver is doing? Thanks for any help.

PCM is a way of coding digital information. If your receiver can accept Dolby Digital and DTS signals then you should set your DVD player to 'bitstream'.

Dynamic range compensation (DRC) can be thought of as reducing the peak volumes and boosting the quieter passages in a Dolby Digital soundtrack. My way of looking at it is if you have trouble making out some of the speech in the soundtrack, then turning on DRC may help. What affect DRC has is decided by the soundtrack producer.
