I put a lot of trust into this site with their reviews (particularly on the PQ and AQ side)- I'm pretty shocked at how "low" they rated the PQ on the release. Obviously Warner Bros is going to double or triple dip the releases, but to not put the effort into a sparkling "reference disc" picture is incredibly disappointing.

I've only read the highdefdigest.com review so far. I was somewhat setback with them seeming surprised by the PQ as most of what they didn't like was quite noticeable to me on the DVD version of the movies too. One thing people should remember is due to the increased resolution of BD flaws are going to easier to spot. Don't forget the special effects of the movies are almost 10 years old, of course things aren't going to look as good as they do with newer releases. I'll wait until the extended versions come out before I give serious consideration to buying these on BD.

I've never bought LOTR on DVD, so this will be my first dip. The DVDs are simply unwatchable on my system, even when using Anchor Bay.

Regarding the linked review's statement, "the colors did not pop as much as I would have expected", I have read that they have dialed down the greens from the HDTV broadcast version. The colors are supposedly now corrected.

The big elephant in the room for many videophiles is the usage of DNR. I prefer not to have DNR, of course. This is the main point of contention against these releases, and well, DNR often is with many movies.

However, if they used less DNR, many neophytes would complain about graininess.

I never bought these on DVD either, been holding out for the blu-ray version. I'll be picking it up tuesday from best buy, saw it for $60 in the sunday paper.

From the blu-ray.com review:
Alright, bad news first. The Fellowship of the Ring hobbles out of the Black Gate of Mordor with a pudgy 1080p/VC-1 transfer that will leave the most ardent videophiles shaking their heads. The image is inconsistent from the outset, a persistent (albeit slight) instability affects the credits and other early elements in the film, colors are a tad overcooked at times, and fine detail is occasionally undermined by some rather obvious digital noise reduction. That's not to say all is lost -- entire sequences, primarily those in the Mines of Moria and the landing (and subsequent battle) at Parth Galen, still manage to make a reasonably strong impact, and the whole of the presentation handily bests its DVD counterparts
The Fellowship of the Ring suffers from a flawed video transfer; one that will leave more than a few fans frothing at the mouth. However, The Two Towers and The Return of the King right most of its wrongs with a pair of solid presentations that are more befitting to titles of their caliber
