It would be time consuming but effective to build a switch box of your own. Nothing too complicated or expensive and most of the parts could be had through a Radio Shack catalog. Just an idea because what you are doing is pretty unique. A little head scratching and practice with a soldering iron and it should work.

Good advice and I have been sketching out just such a box but for me it all about the time to locate the parts and put it together. I searched for something ready made but there just isn't anything that will do what I need done here. It isn't a big deal to switch the amp inputs but the SO has declined to learn this process. That may be due to my warning her about the possibility of blowing up the amp:p

Finished Valance/Cornice

Here are some photos of the cornice that hides the PJ screen. The kit only cost $80 and the WAF factor improved a lot with this simple addition. For those of you with retractable wall mount screens, I highly recommend this method. Easy and cheap.

gotta keep the boss happy. The cornice blends in well and looks like it came with the house. Nice job.

Thanks, the styrofoam cornices were the easy inexpensive solution I was looking for.

In looking at your room, did you consider using the same window covering drapes and valance to cover your screen? You might get some acoustic benifit from drapes behind your LCR speakers.

By the way, I really like your sconces. They look like boat navagation lights (just not red and green;) ).

Custom curtains can be very expensive and I did consider curtains across the whole wall. Actually, I am considering a folding canvas screen now and having it painted by an artist. I saw a design another DIY did and it looks like a great solution and cost effective. I can even place some Dow Corning rigid fiberglass behind the panels.

I just moved my wood work shop to the house and I am ready to start some new projects. I will post pictures when it is done.

Good Luck and thanks for the positive comments.

I must be missing something, you are having an artist paint (something other than white or grey) on the canvas PJ screen?

Can you post a link?

The beat goes on

With my apparently insatiable desire to upgrade, my Denon AVR has become the latest victim (the SO says my AV equipment shudders when I walk into the room ;) ). I have been very happy with the Sunfire 400/5 amp and was looking for a used Sunfire TG IV when I read that the Emotiva DMC-1 was essentially a Sunfire in EMO clothing. The price of this unit is very reasonable (a relative term) so with their generous 30 day return policy I decided to order one. It arrived Friday and the early returns say a big thumbs up to this pre. I have heard criticism of its looks but I like the look (so does the SO). I have only done the basics (balanced out the speakers with an RS meter at LP) but I have noticed an audible difference in clarity especially in multi channel mode. Honestly, I was skeptical that I would hear any difference at all but to my ears, there definitely is one. I will be doing some more thorough evaluation with known music and movies but the EMO looks like a keeper. Some pics:

PS I need to work on my photography skills:eek:

Up-dated Photos

Everybody likes pictures, right?

Here are some updated photos taken this am. They show the amp config and the new location of the Velo sub and rear/front tower speakers. I am a bit surprised that more people haven't done this or something similar with their non-dedicated rooms. We have watched approx 100 movies in this mode and the reviews from all who have seen and heard the system have been stellar. Light control is the big issue for the PJ and in this heavily windowed room, it always will be.

The next upgrade (I am itching to upgrade something:) ) will be to the video side by adding an HD-DVD or BR player, a brighter 1080P PJ and perhaps and electric screen.

The way this has worked out, the cost and hassle of building a dedicated HT space seems unnecessary.

Dual Fathom F113's in, DD-18 out.

OK I lied, my next upgrade wasn't video. I'm not sure how big an upgrade this really is at this point but from a WAF standpoint, the systems esthetics have improved a bit. Early returns on the dual Fathoms are good. I ran the Velo FR plot with just the Fathoms playing and achieved a nice flat (+/-4db) response from 20-100Hz. That was after running the Fathom ARO single band EQ and I was fortunate as I am restricted location wise due to the integration with the furniture.;)

The DD-18 will be missed and remains my favorite single sub solution for music and HT.

...I have broken many AV/HT rules with this implementation but...both I and the SO are simply blown away at the impact this has had for in-home movie/concert viewing.
Forget the rules. All that matters is your enjoyment.

Very unobtrusive setup. Very nice RMK! :)
