Two years ago I bought a 42" Sceptre LCD, after a long time shopping, from Costco. I was pretty happy with it. The size was adequate, but sometimes I thought it could be bigger; I watch from 6' distance. I liked the lack of screendoor I see on plasmas.
Recently, with the warranty running out, I decided to get an old problem it always had fixed, a broken component input. The repair shop destroyed the screen, and Costco is willing to give me a credit for the replacement cost (about half what I paid), which I think is fair. But now I need to pick a replacement.
I can pick the same type of TV; Sceptre tells me the screen is improved, but can't say how; it went from 1 to 2 HDMI inputs and replaced the media box.
It has a 1920x1080 resolution.
Or, I could get something else from Costco, paying the difference.
I dropped by tonight and glanced at what they had, and a few that caught my eye are:
Westinghouse 47" LCD TX47F430S (same price)
Sony 46" KDL46WL135 (over twice as much, probably not a good idea now budget-wise, but I think it has 120Hz... should do it now if I'm gonna though)
Samsung 46" LN46A540 (almost twice as much; not the newer LN46A650 with 120 Hz; I'm confused about where it says it has 1080p but also says "HDTV compatibility: 720p")
I watch 4:3 TV/DVD, widescreen TV/DVD, HDTV, and may do PC gaming.
